So...I've read several off season assessments now that all seem to wax on about how much Van lost this off season and how it sets the team back.

I dont think it has been acknowledged nearly enough how much better the team has become by adding Nate Schmidt. This guy is one of the NHLs elite 2 way dmen at moving pucks out of danger and his addition (even considering the loss of Tanev) takes a mediocre at best canucks defense and plops it up there with some of the best in the league.

Their major weakness now is the bottom pairing/depth/injury call ups. This is a much better scanario than having one of your big minute guys being an average level talent like last year. As good as Tanev was for Vancouver last year hes still a very average NHL defenseman....definitely not worth the payday the Lames shelled out

Before ol Blob rolls in here enraged and hammered with his ketchup stained Tanev jersey on barking about shot blocking, let me clarify...

Tanev is an average level talent wise but a good team guy and hard worker. He was steady, unspectacular and made safe outlet passes but rarely seemed to spring guys on the fast break.

His skating was choppy but he sees the ice fairly well so made up for his skating deficiencies with a positionally sound approach.

All those shot blocks were great and all but generally these guys arent wizards when it comes to possession....CT fits this bill.

Agreed, the way the media is writing their shit you would think Canucks lost Paul Coffey and Patrick Roy.

Canucks are in the same place as last season with the +/- of players except we have someone who for sure can stay healthy for the entire season and has better hands.

Remember this is the same media that say Toronto will take the all Canadian division and there is no use even playing the season.

Tanev isn’t as good of a player as Schmidt but he is definitely worth 4.5 million. All day long. Would have have been nice to have both. But when you have a half dozen garbage contracts like the Canucks do, that obviously wasn’t going to happen.

Pre-covid absolutely.

Now? Definitely not all day long...maybe for a few minutes in the morning before coffee

The garbage contracts are obviously regrettable but the team is sitting nice with these all expiring over the next 2 years and a fantastic young core establishing themselves as an up and coming powerhouse.

I think Benning has grown in leaps and bounds as a GM. Hes gotten better at this and if the wops dont prematurely ejaculate him we could be watching the making of contender from the ground up

Pre Covid he’s looking at closer to 6. 4.5 is good value all day

Blob is so in love with Tanev he’s acquired tanev’s missing teeth and he uses them as anal beads, him and he’s favourite hf sock mathonwy are so blinded by his shot blocking that they forget he never has possession and gets caved in when not playing with a Norris caliber dman. Calgary will have instant regret with that contract, he’s worth 3 million that’s it.

They didn't lose on the defense. Chris Tanev would have been great to re-sign but Nate Schmidt, as you say, is a top notch NHL defender. He is more versatile than Chris. I've listened to some past interviews and he's definitely going to be a positive dude to buck-up the troops in the room.
The team will have to compensate a bit with the loss of Chris.
if one prospect can take a bottom pairing spot on a regular basis because he kills it in camp thus deserves it, perfect. Ya, it's iffy after that so far
as it looks to us right now but it was last year too. Who would have thought Fantenburg would have been almost going to the third round of the SCP?
We'll be good as long as multiple injuries don't take us out. Same as most other teams.

Much of the whining the media is doing isn't so much about letting CT walk as it is about not re-signing Toffoli. If people think back, he was a
rental for the run to the playoffs and then after. Partly because Brock was out long term and partly because signings like his are what contenders do!

He’s easily worth the contract if he stays healthy, though it may get uglyish in year 3 or 4, certainly not as ugly as Beagle, Eriksson, Sutter etc. If you’d pull your [mod edit: Blob, please review Brian's latest announcement]

If he was even slightly more durable I would agree but youre only getting 50-60 games a year out of him.

I would say a max 2 year deal at 4.5 is possibly fair value but with term? Forget it. For reference, the canucks organization agrees with my position

*IF* he stays healthy, which he hasn’t been able to do ever? Next you’re gonna start talking about his amazing puck transition skills like your gobble gobble sock mathonwy
