German, Austrian hockey leagues end current seasons due to virus concerns
The Erste Bank Eishockey Liga, the top hockey league in Austria, has announced it is ending its current season amid concerns related to the coronavirus outbreak.
The Austrian league was in the midst of its post-season quarterfinals, but will see its playoffs conclude without a champion.
A similar announcement was made Tuesday by the Deutsche Eishockey Liga, the top league in Germany, which has also elected to end its current campaign early due to health concerns.

Absolute panic and fear mongering at its worst. I have a 90 day EU trip coming up but the travel insurance industry has announced it won't cover any Covid-19 related issues, even if you have booked and paid before this outbreak. In the EU airlines are cancelling thousands of flights leading into May and June in some cases. So what is a traveler supposed to do? Now I have to decide to go or not as airlines are offering cancellations and tour operators are offering 1 year credits.
Its an over reaction. How many people have gotten sick at a hockey game?

I have actually been wondering about you and your upcoming trip.
I'm not sure if it's a overreaction, we don't have access to enough data to know for sure.
And the numbers/rates can change quickly.
And the mutations are unpredictable.
It's a guessing game and it's probably better to err on the side of caution.
This is very interesting from a math perspective:

Just shut down YVR, the Ports and close the border. Coilers, Lames, Nyets and Canucks can bus a four team tourney to determine the Stanley Cup. All televised, no fans allowed. Seems logical to me.

Interesting, short article here outlining what's different this time around.
For most of this forum's demographics, the number don't look good. DBM better stay inside for a year or two!
Until more testing is available, it seems to be a lot of projecting and such.

What is mind-boggling is that we saw what the Chinese had to do to contain the infection, and we're still unprepared. Well, at least in the States they are not taking it seriously except in NY/CA. Canada seems to be on top of it.
It's like someone said to me the other day that he "doesn't know if it's real". Really? Too many people are taken in by FB posts giving "perspective" by comparing to cancer deaths, traffic fatalities, etc. or duped by the low fatality rate compared with a typical flu, ignoring how contagious it is, that it can be spread by asymptomatic persons, and that the virus can survive on some surfaces for up to 9 days.
What's going to happen is that too many people will be infected too fast, the hospitals will be overwhelmed, and doctors will need to start deciding who gets a respirator and who doesn't. That's when the real panic will start. Nobody will be giving a shit about toilet paper anymore.
That is the whole point of containment; to slow the spread so that our healthcare system can handle the load. That means making testing free and accessible, ensuring employees can take time off work without fear of losing income or their job, and proactively shutting down large gatherings before the infected count rises. The US of A, with their for-profit unlimited price gouging healthcare model is completely fucked in this regard. People who don't have proper healthcare will just keep going to work and infecting everyone.

The growth rate is in response to more testing. If we tested for the flu every year we would see much higher numbers. Italy has closed its borders and put the whole country on a two week quarantine. So what happens when its lifted? Yep, more cases will pop up. This thing had gone wild before we even knew it existed.
Don't get me wrong, I am worried like everyone else I just don't think we need to panic. Certain industries are going to take a blood bath over this.
I'm just pouting cause I have to decide in the next day or two to go......or to cancel and cut my losses. Selfish I know but the world does revolve around me!! But if I do go......EU will be empty. I love that part.
If this thing had started in Africa or the Middle East we all would have closed our borders right away but with the dependence upon the Chinese economy we didn't want to do that.

In case you're not aware, the American Hospital Association's current best guess projection is for 480,000 deaths in the US. They're probably guessing on the high side to be safe, but still ...

Currently there are two strains of COVID-19, and they're not sure yet which one is the original or which is more virulent. The mutation aspect is an interesting one as there's a chance the virus could die out in the summer, only to resurface in a more deadly form in the fall.

This puts the Case Fatality Rate (CFR) at about 0.7%. So equal to a fairly deadly strain of flu, skewed towards the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions.
