With the exception of Carolina not being in the placement; Think goals for and against +/- gets it done?
Never seen it this radical before.
Goal differential doesn't get it done; points gets it done.
But yes, there's a strong correlation between the two (no, I haven't run the statistical analysis to determine the strength).
But I can't see what you mean by radical? The 8 best goal differential teams in the east are the eight playoff teams. In the West, its a little different -- the top 6 goal differential teams have the top 6 playoff spots. But the two teams who are in the top 8 in goal differential (7 and 8; Nashville and Winnipeg) have games in hand vis a vis the 49 point Flames and Oilers. Winnipeg has more points per game than either Albertan team. And Edmonton and Calgary are getting 1.11 points per game while Nashville is on 1.10. Bottom line: 7 of the top 8 in points per game are also 7 of the top 8 in goal differential.
Last season the best 8 goal differential teams per conference made the playoffs; the others did not. The 16th team league-wide in goal differential had the 14th best point total yet still had the misfortune of being 9th in their conference in both categories (Montreal).
That correlation is not going to be perfect is predictable given the NHL season is subdividing 4,920 minutes of regulation hockey (plus overtime) per team into 82 trials and that the 31 teams are also subdivided into conferences and divisions.

Goal differential is a stat I follow but not in absolute terms. Rarely does a team with a positive goal differential not make the playoffs. Think of +/- as on/off. I also loosely look at delta goal differential over a series of 5+ games to get a sense of trend. We're at the 1/2 way point of the season so outliers are beginning to be naturally massaged out of the data. Over the next 20 games, season fancy stats should begin to be as relevant as they get.

Funny you guys are talking GF/GA differential as Bob Stauffer was only today discussing this.
He says this is one of the more relevant stats hockey folk use to evaluate a team. He says of all the team stats, other than the obvious wins and losses, differential is a pretty accurate measure of how a team is either living up to their record or not.
The talk was dwelling on this because the coilers have a bad team - differential. Their best players have terrible numbers as well (Daisaitl -17 with 65 points...how the fuck...?, Klefbom -22, James Kneel -27)
Topper they also use this threshold as indicative of making it or not...as you say, negative differential-no playoff for you!

Reilly was super pissed and McDave commented on that fact post-game.
