Pundits are predicting Trump will start a war just so he can’t be voted out of office. The signs are pointing that way. Trump pitting his own self interest against the lives of those serving their country, soldiers whose dear ole dads didn’t get a doctor to fabricate a phoney diagnosis for bone spurs.Megaterio Llamas wrote: ↑Tue Sep 30, 2025 5:57 pmI couldn't stomach it Chef. Where's the next war? Venezuela? Iran? Both???!!!

What does everyone think of Trump sending the military into cities?
Is it:
1. Portland really is war-ravaged and needs help.
2. Trump is using this to normalize using the military domestically.
3. He is playing to his base and really has no fucking plan.
4. It's just revenge on Dems.
I guess I could have done a poll but, well, I've already written this so easier to just click S..

John Stewart of the Daily Show did a funny bit on Trumps sending of the military to Portlandia. What’s even funnier are the comments by Portland residents. Mrs Chef and I go to Portland once a year, it’s about as dangerous and war torn as Mr. Rogers Magic Kingdom.

Portland is high on property crime but average on violent crime. One would think the latter to be more indicative of being "war-ravaged".
Meanwhile, Memphis has the worst crime rates in the US. But it's a red State.
St. Louis is second worst. Also a red state.
So I'm thinking definitely 4. Probably also 2.
Small chance of 3 with the puppet masters working on 2.

We’ve walked through what is considered the “roughest” part of Portland city multiple times, it’s about as frightening as Mayfield from Leave it to Beaver.5thhorseman wrote: ↑Tue Sep 30, 2025 9:23 pm Portland is high on property crime but average on violent crime. It is 5, Donny's right. Actually the primary reasons are 5 and 6. Parts of 1, 2 and 3 might be present, too. (Portland needs help; Trump wants to normalize use of federal force; he and his some of his base think overt show of force improves order).5thhorseman wrote: ↑Tue Sep 30, 2025 9:23 pm Portland is high on property crime but average on violent crime. I don't think there's much to 4; I had heard (maybe wrong) that there was consideration of deploying the Guard to Memphis (in a red state), and I believe Trump believes that these actions will help the community (which, in Portland, is overwhelmingly dems).
Me, I don't like the policy, at this time, for reasons I might get into later. But I would have been okay with the guard being deployed to Portland in 2020 to respond to the riots sieging the federal courthouse. And I don't have to agree with the policy to be able to see why 5 and 6 are primary motivators along with the parts of 1, 2, and 3 that excise the extreme or hyperbolic.
Last bit, Portland is the tip of the spear for the kind of illiberal leftist violence that was manifest by a gunman assassinating a guy for saying things he didn't like. In 2017, there were serious and credible threats of violence against the city's annual Rose City parade because the county republican party (like every other local civic and mainstream political group) was participating. They canceled the event. Here's a link to an article about it in the Atlantic: https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/ar ... nd/524334/, which is behind a paywall I think (or you have to register to get the whole thing). To show you how much times have changed in today's world of delusional apologists for violence, that reliably left wing but liberal (as opposed to illiberal) magazine ran the article under the title: "A chilling threat of Political Violence in Portland."
Antifa -- this thing that doesn't exist, right? -- probably had its greatest presence in Portland. If you were a journalist and reported on it (Andy Ngo), they kicked the shit out of you, wearing masks (in 2019), and causing a brain bleed. And if you wrote a book about antifa and it was read by a banjo player in the Mumford and Sons and the banjo player tweeted that it was an important book and nothing else, you were canceled by an organized mob, and you "resigned" from your band. (Winston Marshall).
And so it is no surprise that Portland was the place for the siege on the federal courthouse, among the most out of control and longest lasting riots of the Summer of "Love." The out of control "BLM" protests from what must be one of the whitest large cities in the United States.
I used to like Portland. It was quirky. The Portlandia thing was real, and it was comical, but it was also harmless and mostly authentic and therefore kind of endearing. It has one of the best bookstores in the world. It is surrounded by natural beauty, and is itself green.
I haven't been there in 10 years or so, so I don't know how much has changed. But the last time I went (about ten years ago), it was a city with a homelessness problem like no other city I had been too. Friends who were there and were left wingers and engaged in local government described an increasing "soviet" style politics that cared less about helping the people and finding solutions (why they were engaged) and more about ideology. Sad, really.

Your take on Portland is complete utter right wing misleading truth bending biased bullshit, UW, no offence, hope you don’t mind me saying. We have loads of friends there and we go to Portland annually, sometimes twice a year, so your assessment IMO just caters to the right wing MAGA cause, all perpetuated by Trumps politics and the lefty woke fear mongering. Fuck me, if you think Portland is out of order I’m curious of the level of mayhem coming from red states like Memphis in which apparently are in greater need of Trumps fascist military attention.

Doesn't Portland have a large homeless problem? And wouldn't that contribute significantly to the high property crime there?Chef Boi RD wrote: ↑Wed Oct 01, 2025 11:20 am Your take on Portland is complete utter right wing misleading truth bending biased bullshit, UW, no offence, hope you don’t mind me saying.
