...and Mboko has made it to the finals of the Adelaide International, a precursor event to the first major of the year, the Australian Open, which commences Jan 17.
She will start that tournament as the 18th seed.
Laylah Fernandez is seeded 22.
Auger-Aliassime, due to inactivity in tournament play, has dropped to world #7 which will be his seed in Australia.
Denis Shapovalov is seeded 21.
Another male Canadian with some promise, Gabriel Diallo, world rank of of #33 last I checked, will play world #3, German, Alexander Zverev (I'll drop his old lady in the Girls thread one day), thus is in tough and will do well to win a set.
Mboko and Alliassime have a chance to make some noise in their draws.
In other news Canadian golfer Nick Taylor shot a first round 8 under 62 to be T1 after round 1 in the first sanctioned PGA event of 2026 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Nick is the fellow who, in 2023, was the first Canadian born winner of the Canadian Open since 1954.

Re: Good Canadian Kid
Mboko went down in the finals easily, 3 and 1, to world #8 Russian Mirra Andreeva.
...interesting that Russian tennis players continue to take part in world events playing under an "International" label....hockey players not so much....
Regardless a final is a final so another good result for the Canadian.
Nick Taylor remains tied for 1st in the PGA event in Hawaii and there are 4 Canadians in the top 36:
Taylor
Corey Connor
Taylor Pendrith
Adam Svensson
Meanwhile Summer McIntosh continues to turn heads in the swimming world at a Pro Series event in Austin, Texas.
If she stays healthy watch for this young lady to crush the next Summer Olympics.

Re: Good Canadian Kid
I've waxed poetic about Summer McIntosh in this and the previous Candian kid thread.
I've also mentioned she is trained by Michael Phelps old coach.
Here are his comments about her...

I'm telling you....eyes wide open...this girl could turn into the best female swimmer of all time.

Re: Good Canadian Kid
Victoria Mboko won her 3rd round match at the Aussie Open (first tennis grand Slam event of the year as a reminder) to make the 4th round (round of 16 - major tennis tournaments start with a field of 128) of the event.
As a reward she okays World # 1 Aryna Sabalenka next round on Saturday.
She will lose but this is her best showing at a major in her young career and a great start to 2027...a finals loss in Adelaide and now this.
As stated before she could have, at 19, a great year.
Unfortunately Felix Auger-Aliassime had to retire due to injury issues in his R1 match up.
Very disappointing.

Re: Good Canadian Kid
Auger-Aliassime, fresh off the disappointing first round retirement at the Aussie Open due to injury bounced back nicely winning an ATP event in France today 6-4 6-7 (5) 6-1 against home town favourite Titoun Drouget.
This is a good win for his world ranking status as well as overall confidence early in the season.
Stay tuned.
Not sure about the French or Wimbledon but if his form continues to rise he will be a factor at the US Open in September.

Victoria Mboko, following up on some success at the Aussie Open major losing to world #1 and eventual finalist Sabalanka in round 4, defeated Mirra Andreeva, the 5th ranked player in the world, 6-3 3-6 7-6 (5) to qualify for the quarters at a WTA event in Qatar.
She will now play #2 ranked Austrailan Open champ Elena Rybakina in the quarter finals.

Mboko beats recent major winner and #2 seed Rybakina 7-5 4-6 6-4.
Great win.
Two solid wins in a row over top 10 in the world opponents.
Off to the semifinals versus an unranked opponent, Jelena Ostapenko.
#1 seed Iga Swiatek lost today so Mboko is the highest ranked player remaining in the tournament.

Mboko beat Ostapenko 3 and 2 thus will meet 14th seeded Karolina Muchova in the final tomorrow.
Off a win in his last event Auger-Alliasime is into the semis in a men's event in Rotterdam where he is seeded 2nd.
Canadian tennis....very positive results these days.

Re: Good Canadian Kid
Mboko unfortunately lost her final 6-4 7-5 to Muchova.
Two breaks of serve, one in each set, showing the thin ice that wins and losses in tennis are accompanied by.
Auger-Alliasime, however, crushed world #10 Alexander Bublik 6-1 6-2 to set up a 2 versus 1 seed match in the finals versus world #8 Alex de Minaur.
Mboko, despite the loss, another good showing post solid Aussie Open which will gain her more world ranking points and better seeds in future tournaments.
Auger-Alliasime going for his second tournament win in a row and more rankings points towards improving his world #6 status.
