Yah, I thought we were going to take Matty Tkachuk that year as well. His scoring totals were really impressive and he teared it up in the OHL playoffs.

I can get that JB really wanted a good young D-man into the organizational depth chart, but he picked the wrong guy and passed on some really good ones. Sergachev, Chychrun and a much coveted RS D, McAvoy all went shortly after. Two of those guys put up similar numbers to Juolevi and all 3 of them were well built (like 200+ lbs). Instead, JB went with a bird bones who was a bit injury prone. :(

I’m trying to help Doyle get past his Elms angst.

I believe with them drafting two wingers in a row from the previous two drafts in Virtanen and Boeser helped seal the deal on drafting a D-man (Juolevi) over another winger (Tkachuk). The previous GM (Gillis) didn’t draft a D-man in the first round over 6 drafts. The last time a GM used a first round pick on a D-man prior to Elms drafting Juolevi was Nonis when he drafted Bourdon in 2007. Remember, Gillis could’ve drafted BC kid Shea Theodore (Aldergrove) but decided on Shinkaruk instead. Maybe had Gillis drafted Theodore we would’ve drafted Tkachuk?

All logic is thrown out the window because they didn't even interview one of the top 10 ranked prospects leading into a draft where they held pick #5. This was an unprecedented action for any team picking that high and reeked of personal agenda.

It was Linden's petty hatred for MT's dad because he ragdolled him when they were players.

Pathetic

He is Canadian, good size/weight and plays in the OHL so of course the Canucks won't pick him.

Funny thing about the kid is he's ranked 15 in the NHL draft prospect rankings, but he's nowhere to be seen in the first round of any of the usual mock drafts you see on the net. He has good size and a projectable frame, appears to get around the ice well enough, but there doesn't seem to be anything dynamic about his game. Unless management is convinced that he can develop his skillset to be a 2C in the NHL - a pretty big jump for the kid IMO, then yeah, give the kid a pass. More than a few centres in that range who fit the profile of good 3C-ceiling, when there are top-6 wingers available in the likes of Carbonneau.

Yeah, I don't really see the argument for a team -- especially a team where I believe the Canucks are on the development curve -- spending a top 20 draft pick on a player with a low projected ceiling, even if he has a high projected likelihood of actually making the NHL.

I think a player like that makes much more sense late in the 1st round, or even late in the 2nd round (to a team that already has game-breakers).

I just saw Nesbitt at the same 15-spot on the SN rankings - unless they copy-pasted from the NHL rankings. Noticed another article highlighting Nesbitt as one of the biggest risers over the Spring in the prospect rankings. We'll see where this kid goes.
