Really? I would have thought that would have been doable thing since the player can’t just run and sign anywhere they choose, and you paid the price of acquisition.
What if you trade them in the off season before July 1st Doc?
Free agency status begins July 1, so the right being acquired prior to that would mean the new team would technically be the re-signing team.
Yes, but the player needs to be that team's roster as of the most recent trade deadline to be eligible for an 8-year contract. So sign-and-trade is the only option.
