Sure, that made sense back in 1791, but does it now? No militia is going to stand a chance against the US Army. This amendment has outlived its purpose and is now a danger to society.

To be clear, I think people should still be allowed to bear arms, but there are some sensible restrictions that can be put in place. It shouldn't be unrestricted.

Sure, that made sense back in 1791, but does it now? No militia is going to stand a chance against the US Army. This amendment has outlived its purpose and is now a danger to society.

With the number of guns that are in the hands of private citizens, there is no way the US army will be able to keep them in check. The revolution won't be able to meet the US army head on, but they will develop guerilla tactics to gradually wear them down. Also, if there is a mass revolution, don't you think that some of the US military will join the revolution? Anyway, it's a hypothetical situation and probably won't happen.

BTW - I agree there should be some restrictions - mainly some fairly rigorous screening of gun buyers. As far are the type of guns that can be obtained by Joe public, I think other than RPGs or tanks, a thoroughly screened person should be able to buy any type of gun they want.

However.

Eliminate, restrict, monitor, enact, empower will make zero difference at this point.

It is to late to create a credible impact on the number of guns, including assault weapons, in the hands of the people in the good 'ol US of A.

And your limitations/restrictions aren't going to stop any mass shootings at this point either.

For sure, putting in restrictions at this point might be a waste of time but at least it should be open for discussion at the political level.

Back to Toppers question, sure there are lots of guns in the states but how many gun owners are going to join a revolution and who is going to organize it? Yeah they might have guns, automatic weapons. Maybe some rocket launchers even. But they'll have 1% of the success that a similar force in 1791 would have had. They just don't have the technology, equipment, or organization. Yeah they could form a resistance movement but that doesn't really achieve the purposes of the second amendment. The government would still be in a position to impose its tyrannical rule.

If it’s not unrestricted then your first point regarding its obsolescence is unassailable…..which is why it has to be unrestricted. However, as hard charging as some of the American military members are, you would likely find the military split similarly to the general population in the event that a government was being unjustly tyrannical to the point that an insurrection or civil war part deux broke out.

When you look at who wants the guns gone (in any country) the argument is basically a moot point.
