I noticed at the awarding of the Cup how surprisingly well-spoken [Bettman] was when he isn't getting booed.
I am always impressed by the fact Bettman speaks through the boos as if they don't exist. Its not easy to do that.
I also think its weird that he is so hated in a world where fans seemed to buy the owners' argument that a cap was needed (this poster sided with labor on those negotiations). Perhaps its just of ritualistic value to boo him. And that he has the look of a villian.
But love or hate the lockout, that's old news and the NHL and NHLPA seem to have a fairly productive relationship these days.
It’s funny, while I don’t mind the cap, I think I would have preferred a luxury tax system or a franchise player tag. The cap isn’t bad though and levels the playing field. I think Bettman has done a good job for the most part other than fucking Vancouver in the ass on the recapture penalty.
I think the booing for GB now is just a habit and he rolls with it, you can see him smiling when he talks. He is the devil we know and when he is replaced i am wondering what the new person feels compelled to do to show he/she is in charge.
Yeah, Bettman has been around long enough and is used to it so he just rolls with it.
That being said, I think the NHL missed a "PR stunt" this year by not pipping in some 'booing' of Bettman when the Stanley Cup was awarded. They could have just pipped in some 'booing' while he walked to the Cup and stopped it once he starting speaking. He is a media savvy guy so I think he would have played along, surprised they didn't do it actually.

Ya maybe that would have been better. I'd say the NBA is better for having more exciting/frequent trades due to the franchise tag, but is worse for parity. MLB used to get shredded for the lack of parity under the luxury tax system, but that seems to have leveled out. Sure, the Dodgers have one of the biggest payrolls and have been to the World Series 3 out of the past 4 years, but this year they're tied going in to game 3 against the team with the 2nd-lowest payroll - $107 million vs $28 million.
Maybe MLB fixed their parity problem by expanding the playoffs?
Tough to say, but overall I'm glad we're not watching a league any more where every UFA signs in Detroit or New York.

I don't think there's a detectable UFA preference for places with low state/provincial taxes - Tampa recruits UFAs because its an excellent team, while Florida has to overpay to get UFAs. Alberta teams don't seem to have an easier time getting UFAs versus the other Canadian franchises. Over the years, I don't think the US states with the highest taxes - California and New York - have had any trouble signing UFAs.

Solid signing for the Flames. Leivo is a hard working player with a pretty good shot. He was on a 40 point pace last year before he took that cheap shot against Vegas. Completely, unnecessary bush league play by the Vegas guy who hit him. He was slow before so I guess the busted kneecap is a concern but at 875K you can easily bury him in the minors if he can’t keep up.

I doubt Leivo will be up to speed after that injury, and suspect it will take him at least half of the upcoming shortened season to regain his former speed and mobility, IF he doesn't have any setbacks.

While I think it’s a low risk move with decent upside, I’m not sad to see him go. He was a slow player before the injury and the Canucks as a group are too slow. Good for him for finding a gig but he wasn’t going to move the needle much here. There’s no room for him with all the overpaid clowns already cluttering up the forward group. At this point I’d prefer if they have a couple bucks to spend that they use it on a defender.

@ Brown Lizzy Much like your buddy Stecher he’d still be good enough to crack this lineup but time to move on. Neither guy moves the needle much. There’s so much other useless crap on the roster making 4 or 5 times as much $$ as those guys and getting rid of those useless pieces of shit will be huge. Gotta wait out the five or six garbage deals that expire the next two years.
