I think all along Tanev’s intention has been to test the open waters. He knows the Canucks are in a Cap bind. At the same I’m sure the Canucks mgmt have concerns about tying up huge sums in a D-man in his 30’s with an injury rap sheet bigger than Doyles disobedient public behaviour when boozing
I think there's a good chance he goes to UFA, but COVID puts him in a real bind. With no chance of a cap increase next season, and the spectre of declining caps still out there, he would be much more likely to get big money if he went UFA in '22 - after the Seattle money hits. In which case, he'd be better signing short-term, then swinging for the fences again in a couple years.
But, he might not make it to '22 with his injury luck.
So the reality is, very few teams will have the financial means to make a big offer to Tanev. Canucks could make a decent salary offer (Doyle's $5.5ish) on a short-term, or a team-friendly salary (maybe $4 mil x 4 years) on a longer term. I don't know if Tanev could get $5.5x4 years from another team in this UFA season.
Tanev averaged 19:30 this season. He had a couple games where he got hurt in game in the first period and got two or three min of ice time. He gets NO PP time. Myers averaged 21:30 this season. Take out the two games that Tanev got a total of about 5 min and the PP time and the TOI is close to even. Tanev took more reps against better players and he and Hughes were used as a shutdown pair at times. Myers occasionally played a few minutes with Hughes but the Hughes and Tanev pairing were much more effective. Myers settles in on the bottom pairing in the second half of the year to shelter him and Fantenberg.
Tanev is the better player.

I’m not advocating bringing him back. It’s time to get younger on the back end. I’m just stating the obvious. He was better than T Myers this season.

Even with Tanev in the lineup the team has struggled to clear their zone under pressure until this year. Hughes skating pucks out has really helped keep Tanev from getting hurt and i am firmly on board with letting him walk barring a sizeable discount to stay...which isnt happening
