Kopitar was the highest draft pick, (13th I believe), out of Carlson, Tarasenko, Keith, Kuznetsov etc. You didn’t have to completely tank to get those players. I was saying that the recent cup winners had proven that you really only need a couple FULL tank years, sometimes only 1 like LA and the Blues. When you are finishing in the top 8 worst in the league like the Sabres have the past 7 years and potentially on their way to their 8th top 8 worst in the league in a row well as you can see by them, losing can become a disease. The Devils need to be careful. The losing culture is an angry beast and hard to kickUWSaint wrote: ↑Mon Feb 17, 2020 2:46 pmI think Kopitar is pretty elite.... So was Keith and Carlson. Tarasenko is pretty damn good. So was Seabrook. And Oshie. And Kuznetzov.Chef Boi RD wrote: ↑Mon Feb 17, 2020 12:52 pm Stanley Cup History has proven you only need 2-3 elite players from drafting high at the most. Penguins (Crosby, Malkin), Chicago Toews, Kane), Washington (Ovechkin, Backstrom). Sometimes only 1 like St. Louis (Petrangelo) and LA (Doughty). The rest comes from timely good trades and signings and good drafting in the later rounds. According to stats, Hischier and Jack Hughes should be enough. Teams must be careful, the losing culture like in Buffalo is no good, does more harm than good. The Devils seem to be aligning themselves with a long term tank, it’s fools gold!
Nit picks aside, I agree with you. Losing culture is bad, and it takes more than having high draft picks to draft your way out of a hole. Obviously, you got to draft the right guys and develop them the right way, and there are very few players who come in totally ready to go. And none that can't improve.
Of course your chances are better with high picks instead of low picks or no picks, but you can build a team in other ways by turning your aging assets or picks into already-drafted assets. That WCE team wasn't quite elite, but it was pretty damn good. Nearly all the top players were acquired by trade. (Naslund the failed prospect for another failed prospect; Morrison for aging asset; Bert for aging assets; Jovo for aging asset; Salo for redundant forward; Cloutier for draft picks; Linden for picks). The only important guys on that team who were drafted were the Ohlund, the Sedins (who played a secondary role (and one of whom was basically acquired for a young prospect at a position deep with prospects and young guys), Sopel, and Cooke. And of those, only Ohlund was really really good during the WCE peak (2001-2003). [Sedins were quite good by 2003-2004, but finding their way before that].

The trades are coming fast and furious now. Dillon, DeMelo and Gauthier all moved.

Habs did really well trading Scandella to the Blues for a 2nd and a conditional 4th. Didn't they trade a 4th to Buffalo to get him?
Is it me or the return for Dillon and maybe even DeMelo a bit low? Sharks even retaining half of Dillon's salary.
I guess it's better to make moves early before it gets really stupid near the TDD.

Apparently Alec Martinez is on his way to Vegas for 2 2nds. Fuck that hurts. Good second pairing guy. Vegas will be a mean piece of business in the playoffs. I doubt they are done

Yo Hargraves, is it alright with you if we trade another prospect?

Theyre looking for defense next i think. If they were in on Martinez then they'll keep looking around.

Benning said he doesn't want to trade any more picks but thinks our prospect pool is deep enough that we could move 1-2 young guys if the right deal comes along. Gulp.....
The only HW the Canucks need

Agree; minus 16 and slowing down so much whoever he wanted to fight is already sitting on the bench slurping Gatorade.
That is REALLY high rent.

Brockey Hockey to Minny for Matthew Boldy? If Toffoli fits like a glove?
Boldy is having a stinky year in Boston. Back to Dumba
