It's getting warm

The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. However, we all need a break some time so this forum is basically for anything off-topic, off the wall, or to just get something off your chest! This forum is named after poster Creeper, who passed away in July of 2011 and was a long time member of the Canucks message board community.

Seriously though... it is amazing how much ire she provokes.

She's a 16-yo kid who decided to try to address a problem that worries her.
Brilliant. Good for her.

Why would it piss anyone off? :eh:

I want it all and I want it now!

She's a 16 year old kid. What 16 year old kid wasn't an idealist ranter?

Canadians were just told a 29 year old Trudeau was too young to know what he was doing.

Exactly! (At least the smart ones, some are busy snorting glue...) So why do people get upset?

She’s actually saying some sensible things like
”This is wrong. I shouldn’t be here. I should be back in school.”
and
”I don’t want you to listen to me. I want you to listen to the scientists.”

I think the problem is that media are zooming in on her, because she is a convenient symbol.
Young innocence versus corporate greed.
That may be a disservice both to her and the debate though.
Canadians were just told a 29 year old Trudeau was too young to know what he was doing.
Yeah, well, we all know it takes much longer for boys to grow up. :look:

She chased the spotlight as well.

What will be the carbon footprint of her burning out?

As with most green initiatives, they are luxury items. My question with them and the back to earth, organic farming silliness has always been. "Who is going to play God and decide who dies?"

So at the age of 8, after seeing some no debunked climate alarmist pictures, young Greta's aspergers kicked in and launched her on a single minded obsession to fight climate change.

Her obsessive compulsive actions are a result of her mental illness.

The same mental illness and single minded determination that drove Adam Lanza's obsessive compulsion disorder.

This article raises some very good points, such as that economic growth is not an evil in itself and that the best way to fight climate change is through better technology.

It’s kind of laughable though when they suggest that getting rid of fossil fuels might leave hundreds of millions without safe housing, when the recently released IPCC report shows that if carbon emissions are not reduced, one billion people will lose their homes to desertification and/or rising levels.

We need to phase out fossil fuels asap to prevent this from happening.

But the smart way to do that is of course to help third world countries go solar. The technology has improved so much that it is now cheaper to produce solar electricity than to get it from coal or even gas. And many of these countries (eg Brazil, Turkey and India, that were mentioned in the article) have excellent conditions for going solar. It will even be cheaper for them than building coal or natural gas power plants.

The power plants they already have might have to be used for a while, until they have been replaced by modern technology. But the goal must be to get rid of fossil fuels altogether as soon as humanly possible.

The left wing idea that economic growth is bad is crazy though. Economic growth allows us to improve our lives, including improving it by switching to climate friendly technology.

As for organic farming... it!s complicated. Pesticides wreck havoc with the environment, and fertilizer destroys our water. Yet a switch to all organic is not possible. If all food we eat was organicly grown, the farmland area needed would to be two to three times larger than today. And clearing all that forest, or transforming wetlands to farmland, would do far more damage to the environment than sticking with traditional agriculture does.

Instead we need to focus on reducing the amount of pesticides needed and make sure excess fertilizer does not pollute lakes or groundwater.

The pesticides are a huge problem though. Over the past 50 years one third of North American birds have disapperad, nearly 3 billion birds. And a recent study in Germany showed that 80 % of the insects there have compared to 25 years ago.

These numbers have nothing to do with climate change, but are just the same. Neonicotinoids have been banned in Europe, but are still used in North America and elsewhere, despite seeming to have a devastating effect on bees and other pollinators.

If bees disappear, so will a substantial part of the foods we eat.

But I’m optimistic! Once we agree there’s a problem mankind can usually figure out a solution.
We got rid of acid rain. We managed to save the ozon layer by banning freons.OK, people in Australia now have to wear shirts and hats on the beach toavoid melanoms, but it is not completely gone, and is slowly becoming more robust again.

The same with climate change. Once we all agree that the problem needs to be fixed, I’m sure we can do it. :drink:
