Re: The Rebuild...
Now to convert SL to team tank - to get the next Bobby Clarke - Nolan Patrick.
Can the Canucks just win a Cup within the next 5 years.
Re: The Rebuild...
In the old days, you could buy a team.
In the new days you have to play badly in order to try to, (eventually), get better.
It sucks and I'm at the point where I'm siding with those who propose ditching the entire draft selection process and go with something ridiculous like:
31 teams.
31 lottery balls.
No extra balls for anyone.
That's it, too bad, so sad!
It would help take out cauldroning, vatting or whatever that other stupid word people use is.
With this boring, less sensationalistic system, over a period of time, the best scouting and selecting would pay dividends.
Fans deserve the best they can get. After all, they are the ones that pay for everything.

I hope when it comes time for Horvat to put pen to paper that he tells Benning that he doesn't like the direction of the team and that a perpetual "well we competed hard" will simply become a losing culture. Right now we're on pace to be the new Edmonton Oilers.....but we aren't getting the plethora of top-3 picks that they got.
It still pisses me off that they got McDavid.
And it pisses me off more that the Sharks, Kings, and Ducks, all shit the bed that season so we were a playoff team when we should have been a lottery team.
As much as I like the Sedins, I'm starting to hate the fact that we have them.

Why? We're a bottom-feeder with them. Without them we'd still be a bottom-feeder.Mëds wrote: As much as I like the Sedins, I'm starting to hate the fact that we have them.
Is it because management is too cowardly to admit a rebuild, so they hide behind the "we owe it to the Sedins" mentality? Either way, that's not the Sedins fault.
I don't get why people want to run the Sedins out of town, or blame them for our struggles.

Re: The Rebuild...
The lottery system is stupid, get rid of it. It's the repetitive tanking I can't stand. Team that gets first overall pick doesn't get a top 5 pick for 5 years, 2nd overall pick gets no top 4 pick for 4 years, 3rd overall pick gets no top 3 pick for 3 years and so on. Yeah probably doesn't work but fuck the current lottery system sucksmicky107 wrote:In the old days, you could buy a team.

If anything they should reward the Stanley Cup winner and the best regular season teams by reversing the order of the 2nd round so you reward the Stanley cup team with back to back 30th and 31st pick and so on. There is something wrong with rewarding incompetent teams with the best opportunity to draft the best prospects but at least punish their incompetence by making the worst team in the league get the 60th pick in the 2nd round instead of the 31st.

Re: The Rebuild...
I'd be happy with all non-playoff teams getting an even lottery for the first 1/2 of the picks- then the rest fall into line as they're eliminated.
The current system is a joke.
The current system is a joke.
Re: The Rebuild...
I think outside of the top-5 for 5 years is overkill. There are some teams that just legitimately suck, and let's be honest, unless your 1st overall pick is a McDavid, Matthews, Crosby, Laine, Kane, or Tavares.....well you can't be expected to turn things around with one player.RoyalDude wrote:The lottery system is stupid, get rid of it. But you are right about the current system being ridiculously stupid.
As soon as the Oilers won the lottery for their 3rd 1st overall pick in a row I suggested that they change the system so that no team could stack the deck with 1st overall picks by tanking. When a team wins the lottery then the highest they can pick the following year is 4th, the year after that 3rd, the year after that 2nd.

Re: The Rebuild...
Simple. Bottom 10, straight lottery, even odds across the board. Next ,10 another lottery, even odds. Top ten draft by rankings.
Go back to straight reversed rankings for the second round.

Re: The Rebuild...
I like that, of course that means we will never have a first overall because we will never have the luck.Hockey Widow wrote:Simple. Bottom 10, straight lottery, even odds across the board. Next ,10 another lottery, even odds. Top ten draft by rankings.

Re: The Rebuild...
Not a fan of the lottery at all. I'm OK with the worst team getting the 1st overall but not getting a top 3 pick consistently in the following drafts. It stops the repetitive tanking, spreads the wealth. Can't stand the luck of the draw. The Jets getting Laine is fucking bullshit when they are already well stocked with good young players.

Re: The Rebuild...
Yeah if you win the 1st overall, the next year your team should be out of the top 3 overall regardless of where your team stands.RoyalDude wrote:Not a fan of the lottery at all. Re: The Rebuild...
The NHL needs to:
a) reduce the number of teams
b) increase the bottom cap spend
c) make every game a 3 pointer
d) totally revamp the draft process
Too many cheap owners, too many team like the Nucks that are "still" in it and they wont do the right thing.
Trades are almost non existent now, scoring is down, we get excited about someone get 50 points.

I agree and that is a post from the heart, Reef, but your a) is not going to happen, even if it should!Reefer2 wrote:The NHL needs to:

I fear the product is going to become so watered down, eventually it will make TV contracts unrenewable or even cancelled.
Bettman's answer is attempting to take the NHL to Asia. That's right, Asia, and not that far down the road.
Somebody, one day, has to stop this maniac and bring our league back to something respectable.

Re: The Rebuild...
It's at this point in the season having veterans to mentor help bart/bo/grans etc are not needed as much, looking at you burrows and/or hansen, sbisa.
That young trio just need the Sedins/Sutter/Eriksson to help take the hard minutes, we got a lot of 3rd/4th liners even some in Utica who could play.
It's this time in the rebuild where it should be calculated the team should sell off non-core vets for picks and prospects, jump the gun before the TDD if you can, we all know most teams are cheap AF and aren't offering as much at this point and could offer more towards the 28th.
Also check in on agents for our RFA's to see what the price is and start those negotiations if possible, if some are asking too much, might look to make a big hockey deal as well, or prepare for those trades come the draft and expansion draft, lots of moves should be considered where we get younger and get picks and prospects.

Re: The Rebuild...
The line that has been driving the bus of late has been Burrows - Bo - Baertschi. Granlund is a tweener at this point, and his disappearing act would be even more apparent if he was expected to be a go-to scorer.SKYO wrote:It's at this point in the season having veterans to mentor help bart/bo/grans etc are not needed as much, looking at you burrows and/or hansen, sbisa.

Sutter had a good game tonight, but at $4.5M he's overpaid. Burrows at $2M or less is a much better option (should he be willing to come that cheap) as he is a much smarter player.
Your leaders on this team after the Sedins are Burrows, Hansen, and Bo.
There is a gaping hole in the leadership on the blueline right now.
