The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. However, we all need a break some time so this forum is basically for anything off-topic, off the wall, or to just get something off your chest! This forum is named after poster Creeper, who passed away in July of 2011 and was a long time member of the Canucks message board community.

Lol! Russian Times, Putin's main desinformation centre, interviewing a "journalist" from Dispatch International...

:lol:

:roll:

Yeah, there was some rioting in some suburbs a couple of years ago. They mention this started when a 69-yo man was shot by police. That incident happened in 2013, so, yeah, very relevant. Not saying that there has been no rioting since, when unemployment goes up, as it did after the US economy collapsed in 2008, people get frustrated. But it's not as prevalent as the RT or Dispatch International ( :lol: ) would like you to think. :roll:

This is why the fake news and conspiracy bullshit is dangerous.
Police responded Sunday to a report of a gunman at a pizza restaurant in northwest Washington, D.C, according to a police spokeswoman. D.C.
...members of the so-called alt-right Neo-nazi movement began circulating online a conspiracy theory that claimed the hacked emails of John Podesta, Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman, suggested Democratic Party members were involved in a pedophile ring operated out of the pizzeria. The theory was one of many fake-news stories propogated by Trump supporters that would make it into the mainstream media. “They ignore basic truths,” James Alefantis, the restaurant’s owner, told the BBC this week. The theory claimed the ring was run out of Comet Ping Pong’s basement, but “we don’t even have a basement,” he said.
But hey - truth doesn't matter any more, does it?

Highlites the need to Make America Great Again.
Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.

I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.

Would Logisk Svensk include you in that 70% leftist category? :evil:

Well in fairness to the psycho in question, the theory claims it's a secret basement. :drink:

And if we're talking about "basic truths" here... well your article says:

"The theory was one of many fake-news stories propogated by Trump supporters that would make it into the mainstream media"

... shouldn't that be "propogated (sic) by an extremely small sub-group of Trump supporters"?

Oh yeah... the 'secret' basement. :D

As for propagating the news - I won't say it's a small sub-group (let alone extremely small sub-group) that quickly shares fake news. It's a serious problem now that people stay within their smaller and smaller bubbles.

It's an extremely small sub-group of people of start these stories, but it's a large group that wants to believe anything negative about the other side and shares these stories with the rest of the 'facts-don't-exist' crowd.

All sides have bias, but it seems that only one side lives off the fake news and lies to survive.

.

This "news" being spread around lately about how fake news influenced the election... is fake.

That's right, fake news about fake news.

And... COME ON... everyone knows about the other side and her pathological lying issues. :roll:

Not even gunna mention how hard MSM has worked to paint Donald in as bad a light as possible all year...

Although this thread is about the 'election', I don't recall writing anything about how fake news swayed the election. People's minds were made and they looked for sources (fake or true) to confirm their deeply held beliefs.

It's one thing for posters on a hockey board to talk about 3 million illegals voting, but it's another thing to have the president-elect using the same 'source'.

Fake news is a problem - always has been, but now it's taken on a new life in social media. All it does is create two realities side by side. Fake news used to be called propaganda, where it was used to sway popular opinion - now it's just clickbait to make people rich and damn the consequences.

As for the MSM telling everyone how bad trump is? That was a case of too little, too late. They made him what he is today - president elect. I hope they're happy.

Oh they're definitely not happy!

It backfired, just as backstabbing ole Bernie backfired for that wicked witch.

And yeah, folks didn't talk much about fake news being a factor *during the election*

... but they're talking up a storm now Jack!

It's all bullshit anyway, as you say there has always been propaganda.

An unknown number of illegals voted, everyone is free to guess as to how many.

(even the President Elect)

How many do you think Corn?

(I posted some research done on this a while back in this thread)

I read a bit of the post, and meant to go back to it. Just been too busy.

As for how many? No idea, but I would bet that it's a LOT less than 3 million! :D A LOT less.

Why would illegals risk arrest to vote? Why would 3 million of them risk arrest? (btw, Illegals make the BEST drivers ;) )

If the total number came in at over 10,000 I would be really surprised. Even that seems too high.

Well, "logisk svensk" would include the conservative party and the christian democrats in those 70%, so probably, yeah. The Swedish Democrats (right wing populists with roots in the white power movement) have had roughly 20% in the polls, and dream of reaching 30%. He's basically calling anyone not buying into their xenophobic BS a leftist. :hmmm:

As for the cartoon: Well, although I do like a cup of coffee and a nice fire on a fall or winter evening, I try to keep it within the fireplace. Also, my nose isn't quite that big, I rarely get that deep a tan and I don't wear a hat indoors, so no; it's not me.

Wait... wuuuuuuuuut :crazy:

Yeahno, Russia isn't evil Per, it's all in your mind I'm afraid. :(
Well, security experts in the USA are also worried. And they also think that the main purpose is not to push in a specific direction, but to sow mistrust in the American system, which is why the alt right, with their tinfoil conspiracy theories, has become such a great and valued ally:
The Russian government today employs the state-to-people and people-to-people approaches on social media and the internet, directly engaging U.S. and European audiences ripe for an anti-American message, including the alt-right and more traditional right-wing and fascist parties. It also targets left-wing audiences, but currently at a lower tempo.

Until recently, Western governments focused on state-to-state negotiations with Putin’s regime largely missed Russian state-to-people social media approaches. Russia’s social media campaigns seek five complementary objectives to strengthen Russia’s position over Western democracies:
•Undermine citizen confidence in democratic governance;
•Foment and exacerbate divisive political fractures;
•Erode trust between citizens and elected officials and democratic institutions;
•Popularize Russian policy agendas within foreign populations;
•Create general distrust or confusion over information sources by blurring the lines between fact and fiction

In sum, these influence efforts weaken Russia’s enemies without the use of force. Russian social media propaganda pushes four general themes to advance Moscow’s influence objectives and connect with foreign populations they target.

Political messages are designed to tarnish democratic leaders or undermine institutions. Examples include allegations of voter fraud, election rigging, and political corruption. Leaders can be specifically targeted, for instance by promoting unsubstantiated claims about Hillary Clinton’s health, or more obviously by leaking hacked emails.

Financial propaganda weakens citizen and investor confidence in foreign markets and posits the failure of capitalist economies. Stoking fears over the national debt, attacking institutions such as the Federal Reserve, and attempts to discredit Western financial experts and business leaders are all part of this arsenal.

In one example from August, Disneyland Paris was the site of a reported bomb scare. Social media accounts on Twitter reported that the park had been evacuated, and several news outlets — including Russian propaganda stations RT and Sputnik — published alarming stories based on the tweets, which escalated in hysteria as the afternoon stretched on. In fact, the park had not been evacuated. But that didn’t stop Disney’s stock from taking a temporary hit. This fluctuation could be exploited by someone who knew the fake scare was coming, but we do not have access to the data that would allow us to know whether this happened.

Social issues currently provide a useful window for Russian messaging. Police brutality, racial tensions, protests, anti-government standoffs, online privacy concerns, and alleged government misconduct are all emphasized to magnify their scale and leveraged to undermine the fabric of society.

Finally, wide-ranging conspiracy theories promote fear of global calamity while questioning the expertise of anyone who might calm those fears. Russian propaganda operations since 2014 have stoked fears of martial law in the United States, for instance, by promoting chemtrails and Jade Helm conspiracy theories. More recently, Moscow turned to stoking fears of nuclear war between the United States and Russia.
