The only advantage they gained was a 2nd round pick and eliminating a massive cap hit tied up in one player. Overall they gained $1.8M in cap for the rest of this season and next year.

Lou can now try to spin some of the dead weight they took on from the Sens into other deals and smaller cap dumps to other teams. They'll have to do that if they are going to load up for a run at Stamkos. But Toronto doesn't have much to offer unless they are planning on parting with their 1st overall picks in 2016 and 2017. The only way Stamps ends up in Laughville is if he REEEEEALLY wants to be there and holds out to test the UFA waters.

And, I have to think that Leafdom is banking on that because right now their roster is absolute shit. It's actually laughable. They must be gunning for Matthews and Stamkos, fortunately they have a TON of names on expiring contracts.

They've copied Buffalo's strategy from last year. I hope they end up picking 4th.

The leaves will never trade for Stamkos. And do you really think a UFA is worth 2 first round picks? (1 top 5). No way Tampa gets that from any team.
Stamkos won't be traded. And the only way he stays in Tampa is if they give hi 8 years/80 million.

You're kidding yourself if you think that Yzerman is going to let Stamkos walk for nothing.

Stamkos has a NTC and according to all reports, will not leave. It's not Yzerman's decision. He is going nowhere.
And you're delusional if you think any team will give-up 2 first rounders for a UFA.
Yzerman also gives up a chance at a cup by trading Stamkos.

stamkos will be too difficult to trade this season, I bet he gets dealt at the draft in a sign and trade deal, along with primadonna Drouin, a blockbuster of blockbusters.
Can the Canucks just win a Cup within the next 5 years.

Would you care to link us to all of these "reports".....I've seen nothing that says Stamkos is unwilling to waive his NMC.

Stamkos only hurts his own market value by refusing to accept a trade when he has no intention of re-signing in Tampa. The only reason for him to do that is if it's some personal grudge or vendetta that he's got with the owners or Stevie Y.....and that just makes future negotiators wary and less willing to hand out trade protection. He'll get paid, no question, but it won't be quite as easy.

And most teams would give up a pair of 1st round picks for a multiple 50 goal scoring center who is 25 years old. And most GM's worth their salt won't give up even a single 1st round pick for a pending UFA without getting permission to speak with the player or his agent first, and if something is worked out beforehand then paying a steep price is plausible.

I would say that Yzerman likely ends up in a situation like the one Benning landed in with Kesler in 2014. The player will only go a couple places (or one?) and the GM has to take it up the ass just to get something for said player.

One big reason Stamkos would consider waiving would be to secure an 8 year deal as opposed to a 7. But as suggested, Stevie would have to grant permission for Stamkos to speak to a team if he expects full value. As it is, without granting permission, Stamkos would still garner a first and a top prospect from a contender. Maybe two firsts from a team that has a window now to win it all, like an Anaheim, and are going all in. He is a great talent.

If his time is up in Tampa, and I'm not convinced it is yet, he has every reason to waive to go to a contender, especially if it is for a team willing to pony up with a new 8 year deal. I cannot see him waiving to go to a bottom feeder. I can see him as a FA signing pretty well anywhere though.

CBA question there.....

If Stamkos is traded at the deadline, can the team he goes to offer the 8 year extension as technically he would be signing an extension and not a new contract with a new team?
