Best we move the COVID-19 discussion out of the hockey forum and move it to quarantine here at Creep's place.

So yeah, not "somewhat deadlier"... 34 times deadlier!
But the worst part is... it's "spreading like the plague".
Highly contagious.
These numbers/rates are subject to change as the virus mutates of course.
This may/may-not be the bug that kills millions/billions, but said bug will be along eventually...

San Jose Sharks advised by county to cancel game due to coronavirus. They refused.
Uhhh-ohhh, how long until NHL games start getting canceled?

Santa Clara County health officials just banned all events that would attract crowd of more than 1,000 people over the next three weeks. Not seeing anything yet from #SJSharks, but would appear to apply to NHL games. #coronavirusCA

It's like someone said to me the other day that he "doesn't know if it's real". Really? Too many people are taken in by FB posts giving "perspective" by comparing to cancer deaths, traffic fatalities, etc. or duped by the low fatality rate compared with a typical flu, ignoring how contagious it is, that it can be spread by asymptomatic persons, and that the virus can survive on some surfaces for up to 9 days.
What's going to happen is that too many people will be infected too fast, the hospitals will be overwhelmed, and doctors will need to start deciding who gets a respirator and who doesn't. That's when the real panic will start. Nobody will be giving a shit about toilet paper anymore.
That is the whole point of containment; to slow the spread so that our healthcare system can handle the load. That means making testing free and accessible, ensuring employees can take time off work without fear of losing income or their job, and proactively shutting down large gatherings before the infected count rises. The US of A, with their for-profit unlimited price gouging healthcare model is completely fucked in this regard. People who don't have proper healthcare will just keep going to work and infecting everyone.
5thhorseman wrote: ↑Tue Mar 10, 2020 1:45 pm In case you're not aware, the American Hospital Association's current best guess projection is for 480,000 deaths in the US. They're probably guessing on the high side to be safe, but still ...

This puts the Case Fatality Rate (CFR) at about 0.7%. So equal to a fairly deadly strain of flu, skewed towards the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions.
By the way, this is already happening in Italy RIGHT NOW!!! They are so overwhelmed that even doctors and nurses that have tested positive are still required to work, unless they have a cough or fever! Give it another 3-4 weeks and the US be in full-blown panic mode too. And you won't just be able to stay home for 2 weeks or 1 month till it all blows over. It will take several months. This is why people are buying multiple bulk packs of toilet paper!5thhorseman wrote: ↑Tue Mar 10, 2020 1:32 pm What's going to happen is that too many people will be infected too fast, the hospitals will be overwhelmed, and doctors will need to start deciding who gets a respirator and who doesn't. I believe the South Korea situation is the most relevant comparisson for Canada (and Sweden).5thhorseman wrote: ↑Tue Mar 10, 2020 2:53 pm South Korea stats are probably the most reliable and have a fairly large sample size.
