It seems they're serious about expansion now...
The Next Great Cash Grab Watering Down of Talent Expansion is on!

Who has the best shot at landing a team?
For some reason, I think Bettman is blinded by Vegas's bright lights and wants a team there. Quebec will have their arena open in September. Seattle needs a rink, but likely has the money. I'd prefer KC, but don't see that happening.

Outta curiosity Corn, why would you prefer KC? Do you think they could successfully support a team with a decent fan base?
As for Vegas, apparently the ticket sale pledges to date are all purchased by individual people and nothing has been sold to corporations or casinos as of yet (may have read that on here though). Of course "individuals" could mean owners of corporations who will then sign their tickets over to their company if this ever happens.

KC? Because it would be the closest NHL city to me. Purely selfish reasons. From everything I've read, they don't have the fan base for hockey, won't have a big TV market for it either. They have a nice arena that a team could move into tomorrow, but I wouldn't consider it a 'hockey market'.Mëds wrote:Outta curiosity Corn, why would you prefer KC? As for Vegas, it's not a hockey market either. They couldn't even support the ECHL there. But with rich people building a shiny new stadium and the desire for a pro franchise of any sort, they'll use the 13,000+ deposits to wrangle a team. With that said, Vegas is used to spending a lot of money to try things out and will have no problem moving the team when it starts losing money.

Re: It seems they're serious about expansion now...
OMG, I just had heart palpitations trying to imagine who we would have to expose on the expansion draft. With our luck we would finish with the number one draft pick only to have two expansion teams getting to pick 1-2 that year. It will of course be Benning's fault.
The only HW the Canucks need

Of course it will be different next year, but anyone agree with that list from last year?

So Sbisa will be gone?Hockey Widow wrote:OMG, I just had heart palpitations trying to imagine who we would have to expose on the expansion draft. Re: It seems they're serious about expansion now...
If, during the course of this season, they announce expansion is to take place for the 2016/17 season, then Benning needs to tank to secure Austin Matthews as soon as we get word that new teams will be coming into the league. Otherwise the scenario that HW postulated will come to pass and our first ever first overall pick will become a 3rd overall pick.....that's just Canuck Luck.
Re: It seems they're serious about expansion now...
I voted for Quebec city and Toronto, only out of the good of the league. By far the most revenue would be generated that way IMO.
Seattle would be awesome, especially because of future rivalry and all ... but I just don't see them being a front runner. Bettman will take Vegas first, me thinks. Just to try and break ground there for the major sports.

Bettman: Vegas and To
The Quebec scenario looks decent, but would it be more successful than Tarana?
How do the realign (again) if there is one or more teams expanding to the East? Cant have 14 west/18 East.
Vegas and Seattle. The Florida and Arizona's of the West.

Did anyone read Poklington's comments the other day, Start up cost of a new franchise could approach $1 Billion, $500 million to the league, then there is the area, operating costs and payroll.........
How many teams are profitable?

Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.

Can't really blame Vegas for not supporting an ECHL franchise, I can't imagine Vancouver supporting one either.Cornuck wrote:KC? Because it would be the closest NHL city to me. But if they do get a NHL franchise I hope they call it the Las Vegas Posse and have O Christmas tree as their goal song.

There are reasons why billionaires keep buying franchises.
Poklington, for example, became a very high-profile guy after buying a franchise.
This no doubt helped him make more money in other ventures.
The NHL has a deal in place with some major US bank (can't remember which)
... which allows owners to borrow vast amounts at ridiculously low rates.
That is always a very attractive draw to Mr Big Bucks.
Owners in America get insane tax breaks, including the original purchase:

Franchise values tend to increase dramatically, so there's that.
I don't know a lot about big business, but I do know billionaires tend to be smart about money.
The three experts in your article all agree some billionaire will step up and pay that price.
People like Poklington always complain about the price... before they pay it.
Well not Poklington in this case because the NHL has outgrown him.
He's small-time now, relatively speaking.
No doubt somewhat bitter and jealous and lashing out.
Yes, I'm speaking out my backside for the most part in this post.
First. Time. Ever.
Honestly!
I'd rather they move some losing-money teams than expand, but expansion is what they'll do...

Franchise values increase dramatically for owners that bought in at $200, $300m.
Will take a lot of growth to do the same for an owner that pays $500m just to sit down at the table.
