Re: Canucks News N Notes 2020-2021
Crappy year to have no pre-season games for Rafferty to show he can kill penalties. With Green in charge, Rafferty is now behind Myers, Schmidt, Hamonic and Benn on the right side, with no route to getting NHL ice time. By the time Rafferty gets a legitimate look, Woo will have passed him on the depth chart. Benning should start planning Rafferty’s trade now. He is too old to be a prospect. After his season last year, he should be getting a legitimate look in the NHL, not going back to Utica. He’ll end up being a wasted asset.
Hamonic has had a lot of R&R having skipped the bubble. If he had any ailments, he’ll be well healed. I still think of him as a Fantenberg (off the glass and out) type player who will get burned on the outside by fast forwards. But like Fantenberg, he should be okay in front of the net on the PK. Hopefully he hasn’t gotten any slower with all his time off.
This signing is probably a good thing for a good left-side skater like Rathbone. Rathbone would cover up Hamonic’s mobility issues more than Juolevi or Benn. I’m not a fan of this move to sign Hamonic, but I’m pretty sure Green is. The Canucks should have gone with the prospects.

They will still see games, just not right off the hop which doesnt bother me one bit. Raffy is an offensive specialist who isnt the greatest in his own end, Juolevi and Rathbone are doe-eyed rookies and chesterfield belongs in the A.
I would rather ease these kids in before throwing them to the wolves right out of the gate. Hambone is a fantastic insurance policy

Agree, with such a condensed schedule there will be rotation and injuries will happen. The young guys will see game time. The Brown Wizard wrote: ↑Sun Jan 03, 2021 8:43 amThey will still see games, just not right off the hop which doesnt bother me one bit. I think Tanev is only slightly better than Hamonic. They both do similar things, Tanny is prob better defensively, Hammy prob more grit. If Hammy signs:The Brown Wizard wrote: ↑Sun Jan 03, 2021 8:06 am Does Van now have the best D in their division? I think so
Out: Tanev + Stecher
In: Schmidt + Hamonic
This would be a HUGE upgrade to our D core. Pairings would look something like:
Hughes-Myers
Edler-Schmidt
Benn-Hamonic
Spares: Juolevi/Rafferty
Quite deep and lots of flexibility for Grenner.

It's Chatfield that you might consider using on the pk.Cherry Picker wrote: ↑Sun Jan 03, 2021 8:33 am Crappy year to have no pre-season games for Rafferty to show he can kill penalties. Rafferty would be strictly pp as far as special teams are concerned.

Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks General Manager Jim Benning announced today that the club has signed defenceman Travis Hamonic to a professional tryout contract (PTO).
Hamonic is traveling to Vancouver from Winnipeg today and will begin a seven-day quarantine as outlined in the NHL's COVID-19 protocol. He will join the Canucks Training Camp, presented by TD, once complete.
The 30-year-old right-shot defenceman played in 50 games last season for the Calgary Flames, ranking second in average ice time with 21:12 minutes per game. Prior to the season's pause in March, he scored three goals and tallied nine assists.
The St. Malo, MB, native has played in 637 NHL games, collecting 188 points (37-151-188) and 591 penalty minutes.
The 6'2", 205-pound defenceman was originally drafted 53rd overall by the NY Islanders in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

I'd only be using Benn in multiple injuries to defense men now.

I’m just now considering the prospect of all the Hamonic fan boys here dancing around with flapping hands doing the Ham Bone as they sing Dem Bones. It’s just horrific.Megaterio Llamas wrote: ↑Sun Jan 03, 2021 9:17 am I'm just now considering the prospect of a Hambone-Rathbone pairing at some point down the road...
