Yep just saw that, good for him to retire, bad for the Nucks to get stuck with a cap hit for an arbitrary rule that Bettman brought in because he's a small, small man.

That said, the cap hit is only $2.2 million as the retained salary of $800k is gone. Not as big a deal.

To add to this, sounds like Lu helped out Florida by retiring as they save $3.6 million in salary plus only have to deal with a $1.1 million recapture penalty versus $5.7 on a LTIR hit. Lu helps out Florida and screws the Nucks at the same time, sounds like him.

Well at least we know now. We can also now retain in three salaries as we no longer retain on his.

I wonder if the Canucks will try to make the case, given how he worded his letter, that he is medically unable to play. The league freaking owes us.

So Luongo wanted to go on LTIR. Panthers said they would prefer he just retire as it would be cheaper for them in the long run and they wouldn’t have to work around the LTIR every year. So he said ok. If he went on LTIR they’d be on the hook for his full salary less our retention and only get relief if they were up at the cap ceiling. So they are using retirement to circumvent the cap no?

I’m really wondering now if the Canucks will seek a medical opinion on this. Read his letter and he talks about how his body just can’t do it anymore and how the double hip surgery makes it so he has to spend copious amounts of time just to prepare.

But 2.2 we can absorb.

Yep I don't think it's a huge deal, it's a bit less than 3% of our cap space so shouldn't be an issue for the next couple of years anyway. In year 3 perhaps it is given the Quinn and Petey contracts, but keeping in mind Podz should be here then playing on his ELC along with hopefully Hoglander and a couple of other kids it should be fine. Jimbo (or the next GM) have plenty of time to prepare regardless.

Now just need to get rid of Loui and it should help, could get rid of my boy Sutter too if needed. There's still ample cap room but I suspect Jimbo uses a ton of it on July 1st - hopefully he doesn't hamstring the team for years to come.
