That is how Rafferty was used in Utica, but he was fine killing penalties in limited minutes. I wanted to see him paired with Edler and given that chance. That’s why the lack of any preseason games really hurts him. He isn’t being given an opportunity to show what he can do. Other defensemen were given the PK job in Utica because they couldn’t contribute on the PP. so they put Rafferty on the PP and gave PK to others. With Hamonic, the puck is off the boards and out. With Rafferty we would see more break away passes. We’ll never know how Rafferty would be on the PK now...unless Green isn’t resigned.Megaterio Llamas wrote: ↑Sun Jan 03, 2021 9:19 amIt's Chatfield that you might consider using on the pk.Cherry Picker wrote: ↑Sun Jan 03, 2021 8:33 am Crappy year to have no pre-season games for Rafferty to show he can kill penalties. With Green in charge, Rafferty is now behind Myers, Schmidt, Hamonic and Benn on the right side, with no route to getting NHL ice time. By the time Rafferty gets a legitimate look, Woo will have passed him on the depth chart. Benning should start planning Rafferty’s trade now. He is too old to be a prospect. After his season last year, he should be getting a legitimate look in the NHL, not going back to Utica. He’ll end up being a wasted asset.
Hamonic has had a lot of R&R having skipped the bubble. If he had any ailments, he’ll be well healed. I still think of him as a Fantenberg (off the glass and out) type player who will get burned on the outside by fast forwards. But like Fantenberg, he should be okay in front of the net on the PK. Hopefully he hasn’t gotten any slower with all his time off.
This signing is probably a good thing for a good left-side skater like Rathbone. Rathbone would cover up Hamonic’s mobility issues more than Juolevi or Benn. I’m not a fan of this move to sign Hamonic, but I’m pretty sure Green is. The Canucks should have gone with the prospects.
Rafferty would be strictly pp as far as special teams are concerned.

Re: Canucks News N Notes 2020-2021
His defensive zone coverage was abysmal most of the year as he was taking off up the ice the moment the Comets had possession of the puck and racking up points at a record-setting pace for the first two-thirds of the season. He then suddenly began taking an interest in his defensive responsibilities around a month before the covid break off of the AHL season. Folks in Vancouver were wondering what had happened to his torrid scoring pace; well, that was it. It was almost as if someone had taken him aside and had a career talk with him, which I'm sure must have happened. If he's going to play that way maybe he does have an NHL future, but it was such a short sample of games unfortunately.Cherry Picker wrote: ↑Sun Jan 03, 2021 10:00 amThat is how Rafferty was used in Utica, but he was fine killing penalties in limited minutes. Chatfield on the other hand, now there is a guy I can imagine killing penalties with the big club. There's no offense of course but he skates like the wind and sticks like glue in defensive zone coverage, sort of like a good defensive back.

Very pleased with the Hamonic signing. Nothing against Vatanen but I believe Hamonic is a much better fit.
If they can get a few more goals from Virtanen or Hoglander makes an immediate impact offensively, and can tighten up defensively in the bottom 6, this team is legit right now. I really like the defense and goaltending despite the loss of Markstrom. Buckle up.

Re: Canucks News N Notes 2020-2021
Hamonic is a Bieksa heart and soul guy. He will go to war to protect his teammates. We need that grit. One of the reasons we brought in Benn. Benn has never lived up to that mostly because he didn't get the ice time. I think Hamonic will be trusted by Green more and get more ice. More ice means more opportunity to protect teammates. that is my expectation anyway.
How many times last year did we scream for someone to answer for a cheap hit on Hughes or Petersson? If we still have a soft as shit response then Hamonic can go. But I think he will play the role bieksa did for us. We will hate his gaffs, lament his lack of anything but eating minutes, and step up when needed. Of he will play it safe for one more contract when this one is up.
And besides, its just a PTO. Maybe he doesn't make the team?

Bring on the Ham Bone. Stud. Ole Tri Cities Doyle the Slow Pitch King, Lord of the Beer Bellies will be happy

Doyle said ‘Hamonic will be a stud’ one time in 2012. The Chef has said on multiple occasions and fairly recently that Nathan Mackinnon, John Tavares, Bowen Byram, Noah Dobson are all garbage. Yep, he’s quite the judge of talent.Chef Boi RD wrote: ↑Sun Jan 03, 2021 11:09 am Bring on the Ham Bone. Stud. Ole Tri Cities Doyle the Slow Pitch King, Lord of the Beer Bellies will be happy
Hamonic on a cheap one year deal isn’t the end of the world. The team has no defensive depth and very little grit.
I forgot about Cale Makar. The Chef said he was a trash can and not worth of being a first round selection less than two years ago.

Can the Canucks just win a Cup within the next 5 years.
Re: Canucks News N Notes 2020-2021
How many rookies do you want in the starting roster. With Ju on D, possibly a forward.
What four d pk if you have another kid brought in? Is Hughes suddenly on the pk, Ju?
Ham may just be pork rind at this point, but he and Benn and a kid can platoon at the 6 spot.

Do you think he can regain any of his previous success, (before last year), with a change of scenery and entirely different team-mates and coaches?

Dafuq! Its like you knew it was coming
K I'm flipping back to indicas. These sativas are bullshit man
Rumours Canucks wanted to sign Hambone + Fact they can't sign him til last day of camp = PTO like Hoffman/Blues.

Yup, the kids will see games, no doot aboot it.The Brown Wizard wrote: ↑Sun Jan 03, 2021 8:43 amThey will still see games, just not right off the hop which doesnt bother me one bit. Raffy is an offensive specialist who isnt the greatest in his own end, Juolevi and Rathbone are doe-eyed rookies and chesterfield belongs in the A.
I would rather ease these kids in before throwing them to the wolves right out of the gate. Hambone is a fantastic insurance policy
The beauty is OJ, Rafferty, and Rathbone are waiver exempt
... great for moving them up/down from/to the taxi squad.
