Can a DEFENSIVE system make up for a lack of QUALITY D-men?!
This year's post-season has been a pretty big eye-opener for me. I did NOT realize that the Penguins played such a similar style to us!
What's also amazing, is that the Penguins do NOT seem to have very many (if at all?) QUALITY defensemen in their system (other than Sergei Gonchar)....although I might be wrong on this. I'd be interested to know who are Pitsburgh's top 6 defensemen at current.
To me, it seems that the Penguins SYSTEM....not individual defensemen....is what's making the Pens so tough to score on.
When you look at some other teams in the league (i.e. San Jose, Minnesota), you also notice this. Both the Sharks and Minnesota had fairly low GA if I remember correctly. However - both teams also have enough firepower up front to score when they needed that goal. To the best of my understanding, Minnesota doesn't really have any top-tier defensemen. San Jose has Kyle Mclaren....but other than that, do they really have anyone who you would consider top-tier?

Seems like he did his home work before taking the position and the Nux going into next season appear to be in decent shape, according to his research.

Looks lie Detroit scouts are signing yet another free agent. He seems to be a step ahead on Bruunstrom

Watching the how much the playoffs have improved as the players have adjusted to the new rules....& there is no doubt that these playoffs have been the best playoff hockey in a long time....one of old school rules I would love to see changed.
Glove hand passes allowed in the defensive zone.
The rule was changed to allow glove hand passes because defensive teams, when in trouble would get a whistle by simply directing the puck with their hand to a teammate, whether they had a stick in their hand or not, or the puck was in the air or on the ice. Sometimes they would just cover the puck with both hands and throw it to a teammate. The Oliers were the best at this in the 80's...smart enough to break all the rules.
Back in the day -70's(cuz I'm old) the only time you were allowed to touch the puck with your hand was to stop it from hitting/hurting you & to stop players from swinging their sticks at a puck in the air.
My rule would be: If the puck is on the ice, (touching the ice) the only player that can play the puck with their glove is the goalie. The puck on the ice should always be played with your stick. No Exceptions.
The game is a stick & puck game. There should be no advantage with using you hands
