ASSETS: Moves the puck efficiently out of danger. Brings a nice combination of size and speed to the rink. Works hard and is effective on the penalty kill. Plays a safe, mature and steady brand of defense. Also owns a big point shot.
FLAWS: He doesn't shy away from the physical game, but he isn't a highly aggressive player defensively--despite excellent size. He's strong, but needs to continue adding some more power to his game. Has been somewhat injury-prone at lower levels.
CAREER POTENTIAL: Solid puck-moving defenseman.
A long time ago, a baseball player remarked: "If I owned a ballclub, I'd hire a $5,000 coach and a $15,000 scout."
Very happy with this signing. From what I read about him before last season, he may actually be under-rated as a pure offensive-defenseman. $4.6 million is a very middle-of-the-road pricetag for a top-4 D, if anything on the low side. Its the equivalent of a 2.5 million cap hit in 2005/06.
Just $850K more of a cap-hit than Salo got!!
LOL, kinda think that's what separates the great, contending franchises from the up-and-down franchises. At least Mattias will have company on the IR!

After all the rumours, who woulda thunk it??
Still I wish Gillis offered Sami one year @ $2mil back in January, pretty sure he would've taken it.
Sami would've been lovely at $2mil as a #6/7.
Ya I wanted Sami back one more year but who can argue he looked like he really slowed down last season? Truth is the team defence seemed scattered without him so we do have some work to do on the pairings and on consistency. We get younger with letting Salo go and adding Garrison.
I know nothing about Garrison so I am eager to see him play. Nice to see all the pundits wrong on this one and nice to see a BC boy wanting to come home.
Don't particularly like the length given the lack of proven consistency, but guess that is what the market requires at this point in order to avoid paying a king's ransom.
Hopefully he fits well with edler and turns into/remains a legit top four guy.
I'm in the "don't know much about him" boat, but Drance is really keen on him, just check his twitter feed. If he's half as good as he says he is, i think it's a solid pick-up. Mckenzie is also reporting that he turned down 5+ to play in Van, so that's a big plus as well.
