The Buzz: The Canucks drop another game at home in what is becoming an all too common result. The boys in blue were unable to get much going offensively, but at least kept even in shots with the Wings, throughout the game.
Goat for the Game: Referee Steve Kozari, who disallowed what seemed to be Vancouver’s tying goal with 28 seconds left in the game, claiming he had blown the play dead before Taylor Pyatt pushed the puck and goalie Chris Osgood into the net.
Bad Blood: After watching Detroit abuse their top stars, the Sedins, last week, the Vancouver defense, particularly Kevin Bieksa, was more than happy to cause problems all over the ice for the Red Wings top line of Henrik Zetterberg, Tomas Holmstrom and Pavel Datsyuk.
Lamplighter: Detroit’s Jiri Hudler scored the game-winner late in the second period, after undressing Canucks’ defenseman Alex Edler and roofing a close range shot over Roberto Luongo’s left shoulder.
Stats Stupid: Detroit goalie Chris Osgood is the last Detroit goaltender to post a shutout against the Canucks, but he did so nearly 10 years ago, on Jan. 14, 1998, during his first stint with team.
Saviour/Unsung hero: Luongo’s glove save on a Henrik Zetterberg shorthanded breakaway, when the game was 2-1 Detroit, kept the Canucks in range of the deadly Red Wings and the home team soon tied the game. Luongo continued to keep his team in it, through the third period, but it wasn’t enough.
Special Ed: The Canucks power play looked sloppy and ineffective, going scoreless with the man-advantage. The one bright spot was a series of Sami Salo slap shots in the first period that looked as dangerous as you’d expect from him, despite recently returning from the wrist injury he suffered in training camp.
Crunch Time: Matt Cooke’s hit on Dan Cleary, driving him into the glass pane at the end of the Detroit bench caught the fans attention and gave the Canucks some much needed momentum leading up to the 2-2 tying goal for Vancouver.
Sickbay: Lukas Krajcek missed his second straight game with an injured ankle, suffered when he slipped on a metal grate en route to dinner during the team’s recent road trip.
1st star: Henrik Zetterberg
2nd star: Niklas Lidstrom
