Canucks Pick Up First Home Win!

Post by Daniel Wilson »

The Buzz: The Canucks win back-to-back games for the first time this season and seem to have quickly righted the ship, following Wednesday’s 8-2 loss to Philly. The team has put to rest their winning at home woes and it was refreshing to see the team leave their home ice after the first period to a chorus of cheers rather than the boos they’ve faced in their previous two home games.

Lamplighter: Henrik Sedin’s connection with his brother Daniel across the slot for a beautiful top corner shot gave the Canucks a 2-0 insurance goal that would swing the second period momentum in their favour.

Combo B: For the second straight game, Alain Vigneault went with a fourth line of Jeff Cowan, Rick Rypien and Alex Burrows, on the strength of the line’s gritty play on Friday in Edmonton, which included rare fourth line goals from Rypien and Burrows. This experiment ended though with Cowan’s leg injury in the first period.

Fisticuff: Heavyweight call-up Zack Stortini dropped the gloves with Canuck Jeff Cowan off the opening draw and after exchanging a few punches, to the delight of the GM Place crowd, tackled Cowan to the ice.

Sickbay: Jeff Cowan left the game after the first period with a leg injury.

Special Ed: The Canucks power play was very controlling, as was their penalty kill, but one can’t forgive yet another shorthanded goal being scored against them, this time by Oiler Andrew Cogliano.

Sign of the times: The “Oilers Suckâ€￾ chant was out in full force from before the opening face off and reached a fevered pitch in the third period following the fight between Byron Ritchie and Sheldon Souray.

Class act: Ritchie stepping in to defend teammate Ryan Kesler who was knocked down by Souray. The move was quite wise as the move resulted in both men being sent off the ice, meaning that Vancouver lost a fourth line grinder, while the Oilers lost Souray’s booming shot and power play quarterbacking, which was sorely missed on the ensuing Edmonton power play.

X-file: Matt Cooke spent a rare game in the press box for the Canucks. Look for him to bounce back in his next appearance as the message will be loud and clear for him to go back to the agitator style of play he’s well known for.

Shouldn't we save that for the playoffs.

But despite my bad karma i dare to say we'll see Cooke raging again. ;)

Welcome to the forums Daniel. Good comments on Cooke, Ritchie, and the Sedins. I hope Cowan isn't too badly injured.

NOTE: In order to keep the forum from getting cluttered, we generally post all game-related topics in a single game-day-thread (GDT) - one per game. The GDT for today's game is here:

I look forward to more of your poignant observations in the future.
