As someone pointed out, Marner needs to be signed before the season starts or the leaves will have even more challenges getting cap compliant, they can't afford another Nylander situation where his cap hit increases everyday after the season starts...

It's complicated, but the Leaves do get something out of the deal, depending on what else happens.

In theory this should help them to utilize more of the LTIR room created by Horton going on LTIR.
