The Brexit disaster

Re: The Brexit disaster
Another hilarious twist in this absurd saga is that one of the lies continously spread by the Leave campaign was the imminent threat of Turkey becoming a EU member. In many of their posters and memes it seemed that it had already been decided.
This is unfortunately extremely unlikely to ever happen, as every member state has a right to veto the addition of new member states, and there are quite a few (France, Austria, Poland... a lot of the Catholic countries) that are vehemently opposed to the inclusion of Turkey, and as I just said, it is enough that one single nation opposes the addition of a new member for it not to happen. Had the UK decided to stay in the union, they themselves could veto it - if they felt they had a problem with Turkey joining.
So, imagine the irony that their foremost champion, Boris Johnson, himself is of Turkish descent on the sword side!
His great grandfather was Ali Kemal Bey (1867 – 1922), an Ottoman-born Turkish journalist, newspaper editor, poet and a politician of liberal signature, who was for some three months Minister of the Interior in the government of Damat Ferid Pasha, the Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire, and was murdered during the Turkish War of Independence.
His son, Osman Wilfred Kemal, after his father's death changed his name to Wilfred Johnson (adopting his maternal grandmother's maiden name), and was the father of British politician Stanley Johnson. Through Stanley Johnson, Ali Kemal is the great-grandfather of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, as well as Jo Johnson (MP for Orpington), the journalist Rachel Johnson, and the entrepreneur Leo Johnson.

Btw, Boris Johnson was born in New York City, and thus is a natural born American citizen.
If he ever gets tired of British politics, he could run for president in the USA instead.....

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
The British Supreme Court has now ruled that suspending the UK parliament was unlawful!
https://www.bbc.com/news
Parliament may reconvene again as early as tomorrow.
Labour is calling for BoJo to resign.
LibDems are calling for BoJo to resign.
SNP are calling for BoJo to resign.
Plaid Cymru is calling for BoJo to resign.
Nigel Farage (always the odd man out) is calling for BOJo to fire his advisor, Cummings.
Bring out the popcorn!
Can't wait to hear Bercow's choice of words when scolding the PM... "He has been a very naughty boy" perhaps?
"OOORRRRDDDEEEEEEEER!"

Germany's Bundesrat is pushing for a new law: 3 years in prison for disrespecting the EU flag or the EU hymn.
This will soon go to a vote before the Bundestag... it is expected to be implemented.
European Union = Fourth Reich
BREXIT WHILE YOU CAN!!!

Stupid law, for sure, but if you read the article you notice that these rules are already in place, protecting not just German flags and symbols, but also those of foreign nations. So, technically, you could get up to three years in prison for burning a Canadian or Swedish flag, or even a Union Jack, in Germany. They are just broadening it to also include the EU.Strangelove wrote: ↑Tue Oct 01, 2019 8:20 pm https://www.welt.de/newsticker/news1/ar ... etzen.html

The old geezers may see it from thst kind of perspective. Fear of the unknown. Nostalgia for times gone by.
Two thirds of voters over the age of 60 voted for brexit.
The young generation has lived in the Union their whole life and they recognise the benefits and opportunities of a continent without borders. Study in France. Work in Germany. Vacation in Spain. No red tape, no passports, no visas or work permits.
Two thirds of voters younger than 30 voted to remain.
The interesting thing is that even though hardly anyone has changed their mind about brexit, the number in favour of remaining is increasing, because since the referendum in 2016 three years’ worth of geezers have died and three years’ worth of young people have reached the voting age.
And seriously, if you think brexit is about migration, you don’t really understand the issue at hand.
After brexit, the shortages in the work force when Poles and Swedes head elsewhere will be mainly solved by people from the commonwealth. If anything, that will lead to a browning of the UK.
But, sure, I bet a lot of brexiteers actually think brexit will lead to less immigrants, and that that would be a good thing.
Unfortunately, they are wrong on both counts.

No but seriously.. YOU obviously dont understand why they initially voted for brexit
I have a gaggle of english rellies with very strong opinions on such matters and that was the primary motivation for the whole schmozzle to start with.
I'm disappointed in you Per...all that british parliament you watch and you still dont follow! (must be an ESL thing...)

Re: The Brexit disaster
The leaders of the Leave campaign maintain that it was all about sovereignty, that decisions should be taken in Westminster rather than Brussels (to which the Scots laconically replied ”what’s the effing difference?”).
Sure, off the record some of them admit they couldn’t have pulled it off if it weren’t for the racist vote, but they still maintain that that was not what it was all about. They have also stated that labour shortages can be met by recruiting from former colonies. That could be Canada, but it could also be India, Pakistan and Jamaica. So my guess is that those who voted in the belief that Brexit would mean less immigrants could be severly disappointed.
Although.... if the British economy tanks really hard, as the result of a hard brexit, that will lead to less immigrants showing interest in the UK, so yeah, quite possible that your ”rellies” will get lucky.

Re: The Brexit disaster
https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/dark-m ... eaded-by-/Cummings himself writes: ‘Would we have won without immigration? No’, and confirms that the key argument was: ‘Vote Leave to take back control of immigration policy. If we stay there will be more new countries like Turkey joining and you won’t get a vote. Cameron says he wants to “pave the road” from Turkey to here. That’s dangerous. If we leave we can have democratic control and a system like Australia’s. It’s safer to take back control.’ He adds, ‘It is true that we did not do much on immigration before the 10 week official campaign. That is because ... we did not need to. It was far more important to plant other seeds and recruit support that would have been put off if we had focused early on immigration. Immigration was a baseball bat that just needed picking up at the right time and in the right way
And yes, he refers to the immigration issue, not racism, because of course no one calls themselves racist. Furthermore, I don’t even think he necessarily is, he just wanted to win at any cost, and courting and winning the racist vote was part of that.
Read the article, see the stuff they posted online. It’s racist.
