Too bad. I like their brand of football.

Russia, the least talented team still in the tournament, will face the winner of Croatia and Denmark.
Neither of those teams is a powerhouse, so perhaps the Russians can ride the home crowd support all the way to a semifinal?

We'll see.

Spain was the better team, but sat back once they had a one nil lead. Then when Russia scored the game tying goal, they started showing what they got, and the Russians were severly outplayed but managed to prevent a game winning goal and then went on to win on penalty shots.

I'd say poor coaching by the Spanish, and keeping in mynd that they fired the head coach two weeks ahead of the tournament, when it was revealed he had signed a contract with Real Madrid, that was almost inevitable. How can a coach get a fair shot when he takes over the reins just two weeks ahead of a tournament?
That seems to be the problem with the top teams this year, sitting back and assuming they deserve to win instead of attacking and keeping the ball in the other half. Best defense is a good offense.

Two minutes left of overtime, penalty kick for Croatia!
And Schmeichel* saves!

Overtime over now, so there will be more penalty kicks.

Great video!

Missed today's game but Spain were underwhelming this tournament. Actually all 4 of the most cited favourites have looked anything but invincible. This World Cup reminds me a lot of 2002 - only difference is I hated that World Cup and this one has been wildly entertaining!

Brazil finally showing their true colours.
Probably the team to beat in this tournament, especially now that Germany, Spain and Argentina are gone.

Will be interesting to watch Belgium later tonight though.
This is probably the best team they have ever had.
Will it be enough to challenge for the title?

Am I the only one wondering where Snowy (Milou in French) is during games?

Belgium vs Japan became far more entertaining than I had thought.

Japan actually grabbed a 2-0 lead halfway through the second half.
Then Belgium countered with two fast goals.

Then it was tied into injury time.

With just a few seconds on the clock Japan had a corner kick.
Most people thought they'd do a short one and just keep the ball within the team to force overtime.
Instead they lobbed it in in front of the goal, the goalkeeper grabbed it, tossed it to de Bruyne who started a counterattack, and with a few swift passes they created an open goal and scored!

Fantastic game!
Worthy winners!
Really felt sorry for Japan.

(Someone will have to comfort his wife now... :mex: )

Setting up the winning goal

Just when I thought I'd seen the game of the tournament, there's even more drama. Tough break for Japan as they really went for it but what a spectacular game! Belgium's golden generation were staring death in the face and somehow came through. That is a seriously talented team that has never lived up to the billing but my god will they be in tough against Brazil!

Here in England, the early stages of overconfidence are beginning to set in! There are many naysayers but it's hard not to get ahead of yourself when the stars seem to align just for you! So... England advances thanks in large part due to James Rodriguez's injury only to lose to Sweden! :D You heard it here first!

A team up 2 - 0 should never lose 3 - 2 with that little time.

The big change this year is that too many of the top teams were not mentally prepared for playing lesser teams. Too predictable and boring soccer.

They should bring in a rule that you can only have the ball for 30 seconds before you have to take a shot, like basketball. Or once you get it past half you cannot kick it back to your goalie.

I am glad some of the big teams are gone, hopefully this creates more excite in the sport.

Not sure which opponent I prefer for the quarter final, but the irritated mood on the pitch is good.
Yellow cards are excellent. As many as possible! Especially for the winning team. :drink:
