The Champions Hockey League is a tournament with 48 teams from 13 European nations (Sweden 8, Finland 8, Germany 6, Czech Rep 6, Switzerland 6, Austria 4, Norway 2, France 2, Slovakia 2, Denmark 1, Poland 1, Belarus 1, Great Britain 1). It started out as a the Nordic Trophy in 2006, a pre-season tournament between Finnish and Swedish teams. In 2010 they added German, Swiss, Austrian and Norwegian teams and switched name to the European Trophy.
The IIHF had created a Champions Hockey League in 2008, but it got cancelled after just one season due to a lack of sponsors. In 2014 the IIHF announced that the European Trophy would inherit the name and become the new Champions Hockey League. Luleå HF won the inaugural season of 2014/15, and then Frölunda Indians have won the following two.
The 48 teams are divided into 16 3-team groups where the teams face eachother twice (home and road), then two teams from each group go on to a 32 team elimination phase where you play your opponent once at home and once on the road, and the combined winner moves on to the next stage, all the way to the final, which is decided in one single game.
