Don't hate the pick. Think he could've been had at 8-10th overall, and someone would've coughed up a 2nd to get at Tkachuck. Arizona just paid 20th, 53rd, and took on 7M in cap space to move up 4 spots...Ronning's Ghost wrote: If you really hate the pick, remember that Benning has shown the ability to be dispassionate about his assets. If the Canucks do retain Juolevi, I think that pushes back the timetable for their first Stanley Cup to 2019, at the earliest.

I would have thought so, too, but I doubt that Benning was refusing to take phone calls, so it seems that there wasn't. Bummer. Maybe there is a cadre of GMs that really hate the Vancouver franchise in general, rather than just Gillis.Island Nucklehead wrote:Don't hate the pick. Or they know Benning is capable of being taken advantage of in trades and don't respect him. Either way, at least he didn't trade it for a late first and a third...Ronning's Ghost wrote:I would have thought so, too, but I doubt that Benning was refusing to take phone calls, so it seems that there wasn't. NJ got a 3rd to drop ONE spot from 11 to 12, Benning had to know Cgy wanted Tkachuk and should have been able to poker at least that out of Treliving if not one of their 2nds.Island Nucklehead wrote:Don't hate the pick. If anything I hope Benning has learned to stop talking. Everyone knew he wanted Dubois, then Juolevi. He can't play poker.

Re: Canuck select Olli Juolevi - #5 pick
After Dubois went third I was holding onto a thin strand of hope that we could get the finn who's name I can't spell. Puijarvi? Anyway, once I saw Chiarelli's smirk on the way up it was all to obvious he was excited at the fortune that fell into his lap. Oilers essentially got a top 3 prospect handed to them and I can't blame them for jumping on it but if there was ever a case for Canuck luck, this was it. I really believed Dubois would be our pick at 5.
First the lottery kicked us and then the CBJ's jumped on for fun.
As for Juolevi, I don't know much about the kid? Nice summary by corn in the opening post and some good tidbits here and there by the pundits but we won't know for sure for likely a couple of years.
I wasn't sold on Tkachuk to begin with so I'm not upset about passing up on him. That being said, I can find something wrong with almost every draft I can remember (minus the Sedin year) and I am sure this will be no different.
We all know Benning is a good talent scout and I have faith in him 100% in this department. The trades and contracts not so much...but regardless of that I think GMJB drafted the right player at the right time. He has yet to give me reason to doubt his drafting skills.

I don't think so...Also... we all knew the pick was going to be one of Dubois, Tkachuk, and Juolevi. We all knew that Benning had the three more-or-less equal on his list. Most draft rankings had Juolevi somewhere between 5 and 8, so that's not a big stretch.
It was going to be a centre or a defenseman, and once Dubois was off the table Benning took their top ranked defenseman...
What would have been interesting is who would he have chosen if Dubois was still on the board at number 5?
I still think he would have taken Juolevi because of the void of like players in their system...
Very happy with the pick...
Take care...

Re: Canuck select Olli Juolevi - #5 pick
It was Dubois or Juolevi all the way. Well unless Edmonton picked Juolevi then we would have grabbed the Finn.
Benning has been saying for weeks he had a D man ranked right up there. Pundits have been telling us for weeks if Dubois wasn't available Benning would either trade down or grab Juolevi.
He obviously wasn't going to trade down too far because he saw a huge drop off in potential after 5-6.
I still feel gut punched. Maybe a delayed reaction or a re-traumatizatio from the draft lottery.

Have to say I had a hunch that Juolevi might be the pick.
Oh well, no forward picked, so on to Lucic!

Had a 10 game pack in 1987/88, I am a fan OK?

I said it before and I'll say it again. Whatever happens with the lottery, the Canucks will get their Finn.
Great pick up today.

Canuck luck strikes again. I thought Dubois might be there, but gosh when will we catch a break?
Having said that...all we can do is wait and see. And wait, we'll have to. OJ will probably go back to Jr and then to the AHL. See you in 3 years kid.

Some folks on HFboards think Juolevi can go to the AHL next year. I thought anyone drafted into the CHL (through the import draft, as Juolevi was in 2015) became part of the NHL/CHL agreement. ie since we drafted him from a CHL team after he was drafted into that league, he counts as a CHL draftee and must be returned to junior if he doesn't crack the big squad.Zedlee wrote:Canuck luck strikes again. Next, acquire forward LE, SS or ML.
I think this will work out great but strange that PLD was taken earlier. If the Oilers don't select Juolevi ... isn't that a good target for the Canucks?

According to Drance and Benning, he can.Island Nucklehead wrote:Some folks on HFboards think Juolevi can go to the AHL next year.
