Let's hope Juolevi is in the Ohlund & Salo mode… a steady all-around D.

Cool. Are you going to break the news to Chris Tanev, or should I?

Because we're not talking here about tenacity, ability to absorb a hit, or to play through pain. I haven't heard anything remotely negative about Juolevi in any of those regards. We're talking about a player who knows that physical play is not his game, and doesn't try to be something he isn't.

I don't recall any complaints about Lidstrom's reluctance to hit.

You know, I seem to recall there actually were. Some people really, really need a lot of rock 'em sock 'em in their hockey -- even more than they like to actually win. But if Juolevi is only ever 81% as good, the Canucks made out very well with the pick.

On the plus side, Juolevi's mom has a wicked mullet.

I think the word I'm thinking of is "physical" more than "tough," so sure. Point taken. Those two words are used as synonyms far too often. They are not the same thing.

Hampus Lindholm? Oliver Ekman-Larsson? Don't have to look at the hall of fame to find players having success with similar skillsets. Just looking at the last half decade of Scandinavian, first rounder, left-D picks works fine.

He's a house. Just massive. Young Matthew is going to have to watch himself, Keith used to come into camp way overweight. Keep Matthew away from the buffet table.

Second, anyone who thinks Tanev or Lidstrom aren't tough just isn't paying any attention.

Find something else to bitch about other than my reaction to this pick.

Relax, it's not a Lidstrom comparison. Just an example of a tough player who was successful not playing the 'rock 'em sock 'em" type game. I could have used the Sedins but opted for a blueliner. He looks to be a player who is calm and cool out there, will make underrated smart plays. Definitely not a sexy pick, hopefully it's the right one.

He's actually still at his playing weight!

Seems like both Arizona and Detroit made out well with this Datsyuk trade.

20th and 53rd is a good price to move down 4 spots, losing Datsyuk's cap hit is even better.

My feeling is that they probably wouldn't have made the trade, had Chychrun not slipped.

Maybe they had him as the top D in the draft. Many did.

Yeah Arizona obviously is high on the kid. But after all the talk of Detroit having to dump high end picks/prospects just to clear Datsyuk's deal, they end up making a pretty good hockey trade without even considering the Datsyuk contract.

If Detroit traded 16 for 20, 53 and Vitale people probably wouldn't be too rattled. Effectively adding $7.5M in cap space is gravy.
