With all these BC disasters/conflict (Mount Polley, teacher/gov't struggle http://www.vancouverobserver.com/opinio ... s-educator) I think this is the end of Premier Christy Clark.

Re: CC Random thread
Thing is Skyo, Mt Polley isn't a disaster. Chemically benign. I've worked in the area much of the last decade, in fact I was driving home from Horsefly the day of the "Quesnel Lake Surfing Tournament" (as some locals refer to it). I've toured Mt Polley several times.
Wood debris is already being boomed to the reload on Quesnel Lake where it will be chipped on site, salvageable wood will be sold. Water was safe, Imperial nailed it when they claimed it was near drinking water quality. For reference, Polley Lake, which is a man made lake by the way, rose 2m with the spill with no adverse water quality effect. The tailings are benign, non acid generating. The clean up of Hazeltine Creek is likely to be a recontouring and reseeding exercise.
A good friend has a cat and wheel loader working cleanup their right now.
No it should not have happened, but it is not a disaster and it will be cleaned up.

Hmm thing is the reports I got via the Vancouver Sun - "Imperial Metals’ estimate of the size of the spill from its Mount Polley mine tailings dam collapse is nearly 70 per cent greater than the initial estimate."

British Columbia says there's nothing to fear about the mysterious, blue, waxy sheen floating on the lake below the mine tailings disaster. You know, the one that spilled 14.5 million cubic metres of toxin-laden mining waste slurry into the river system on Aug 4.
“It was poked with a stick,” an environment ministry spokeswoman told reporters on Aug. 22, and it was declared likely “organic.”
But local residents and a marine biologist say the still-unknown bluish-green film burned their skin like a jellyfish sting.

Re: CC Random thread
The initial estimate was done the day after the spill, not much hard data to do a calculation, more a back of the envelope #.
The blue blob is about the size of my fist, and the stories I have read and from watching the video, it is probably organic and is is probably a fat. Doubtful it came from the spill. Interesting is that the biologist who found it has been quiet for the two weeks since it was found and samples were rushed for analysis. Blue sheen, have you ever been in the organic marshy edges of a swamp or lake? It is ubiquitous.
Her blue blob disappeared in her jar before she got it to the lab. She said she heard a hissing sound as the jar was opened. I assume she sealed it tightly at +700m elevation and reopened it at a lab near sea level. What is the pressure differential inside and outside the jar? When ever I have taken samples to the lab, I'm not around when the samples are prepped for analysis, or did she open it when she got home before taking it to the lab?
Does she know how to take water samples? Did she have acidated sample bottles to retain the dissolved metals or did she keep the samples cool and have them in the lab in 24hrs?
Go dig up the government regional geochemical survey and have a look at what is in all the stream sediment samples draining into Quesnel Lake and compare it to the chemical analysis of the tailings. You may be surprised.
Much of the reporting has been stir the pot fear mongering with little factual basis. They make Golum look like a reliable source. Folks who studied liberal arts because they found math and science too difficult.
Take this headline for instance, "Mount Polley spill: Testing finds elevated selenium in fish", burried in the article is
Have any of the reports concentrated on the years of monthly chemical analysis of the tailings and the water within the tailings pond? It is all publicly available.
Has any reporters been back to check the spawning channel at Horsefly? The salmon, if your cousin brothers haven't smoked them all, should be showing up any day now.

It reminds me of the pioneering work in biogeochemistry done by Harry Warren where he had a theory that if a trout population lived in a stream with a naturally high background level of metals, those metals would be concentrated in the fish livers."These results are to be expected for fish from Quesnel and Polley lakes," says a release from the Ministry of Environment. "When these results were compared to a 2013 report of fish flesh, gonad and liver data, similar levels of selenium in excess of the guideline for human consumption were found.
"The sampled fish also show slightly higher levels of arsenic, copper, manganese and zinc when compared to fish sampled from 54 other lakes throughout the province, but are still within human consumption guidelines."
The ministry says the elevated levels likely have more to do with the local geology than the recent breach at the Mount Polley tailings pond.
"The local geology where mines are located often have elevated levels of metals, meaning naturally occurring metal concentrations in local water bodies could be much greater in this region than elsewhere in the province," the release says.

aha good call tops, been a good salmon/sockeye fishing derby season, however we'll wait till next year to see if it's just as fruitful, as most wildlife could/would probably swim away from this area.

I can't see the salmon voluntarily swimming through a turbidity cloud, they'd go around it. it is the turbidity clogging their gills, not the content of the silt that would be their most immediate danger.

I'm in the wait and see approach at this point, pretty gross seeing salmon with tumors though.Topper wrote:

Why the crying and moaning over violence against women when they have spent much of the past century telling us they are our equals?
Would their be equal outrage if Mike Sam had punched out his boyfriend or would we all be laughing our asses off?
What right does an employer or employer organization have to request security video for the casino or from the police?
Does the NFL have a right to view it and act upon it if the receive it illegally or from sources unauthorized to distribute it?
The last two questions are also valid for the Donald Sterling phone tapes.
If we accept that women are weaker than men and therefore should not be physically harmed by men, can we hire a woman to give our wives a good whooping when they need it?

Major League Baseball left-handed pitcher Chuck Finley was married to actress Tawny Kitaen from 1997 to 2002. He filed for divorce three days after Kitaen was charged with committing domestic violence against him, having beaten him with a stiletto heel.
Tawny Finley, in a declaration to the Orange County Superior Court, claims her husband, Chuck Finley, used steroids amongst other drugs. She even details that Finley bought the steroids from a man named "Rob" from Mission Viejo, and that she has seen him inject himself. She also claims he bragged about being able to circumvent MLB's testing policy.
When told of his wife's accusations, which also included heavy marijuana use and alcohol abuse, Finley replied: "I can't believe she left out the cross-dressing."
