Good term and good cap hit - and it's been done this week.

Looks like Benning is aiming for the 2-3 year mark to be a decisive point in the franchise. Either the current crop of prospects are making an impact and the new core is ready to contend and they build around that core; or they let the 2/3-year contract guys go for picks and prospects and Benning re-stocks the cupboard.

It will be an interesting 2-3 years to watch. ;)

Now all Linden/Benning/Gilman and Co. need to do is get Tanev at under 3M AAV for a couple of years and that would be a very productive off-season, signing their two key roster players under 25. :mex:

Great term and cap. Plenty of incentive for Zach to have two great years and sign big. I imagine Vey will be relatively easy to sign as will Weber. Tanev will depend upon whether they sign him to top 4 or a bridge contract. I imagine they way Benning is trending he will try for a two year bridge type deal. Let's hope he can keep it under 3 million.

If he can do that and lock up Vey and weber we will be set with perhaps 1-2 million in cap, with one goalie too many and perhaps a forward to jettison. A good cap position.

This guy Benning doesn't dick around.

In:
9th overall pick in 2013 draft (Bo Horvat)
Jacob Markstrom
Shawn Matthias
Nick Bonino

I know there are mitigating circumstances, but the list is kind of a downer...

Tell me about it. Steve Anothony was my favorite MuchMusic VJ. We should have never let him go.

Steve Anthony was such a douche. Was always making fun of little Kim Clarke Champniss on the air.

Erica Ehm all the way.

Pardon my ignorance, but any info on why Lindenning weren't interested in Santorelli? The guy was a bright spot in an otherwise forgettable season. Roster incompatibility?

Weber re-signed, 1 year, 850,000, one way deal.

I think Santorelli was given a one time offer to re-up. His agent felt he had earned a two year deal and went shopping. He never got his two year deal but he did get more money than what the Canucks were offering. Their offer was under 1 million. I don't think they were overly high on his return in anything other than a utility player that they would waive if he didn't fit going forward. So I doubt they really pushed hard to get him.

Hopefully Santorelli's role will be taken over by the Jensen/Shinkaruk/Gaunce/Fox call-up brigade.

Or the dynamic duo of Bonino/Horvat.

Of the four guys you listed I'd say Jensen is the only one ready for NHL duty.

Dynamic indeed.

Well I haven't seen Shinkaruk and Gaunce play a game in over a year. I have honestly never seen Fox play a game, I don't think.

Odds are you are correct, but we will see. Shinkaruk looked pretty good last year at camp IMO. He looked much better than Jensen, who was nearly invisible.

My bets are on Shinkarek to really surprise on the upside this camp, depending how rehab and conditioning from his operation earlier this year goes.
more cap space!

35 players to attend Canucks prospect development camp, starting Monday at UBC
by Daniel Wagner, on July 3, 2014 -

Notes:
  • Jake Virtanen just had shoulder surgery, so he surely won’t be participating in any (or at least many) of the physical tests and drills.
  • Hunter Shinkaruk, on the other hand, might be ready after losing the bulk of last season to hip surgery. He was close to being 100% according to recent reports.
  • Only one of the five goaltenders coming to camp is Canucks property, second round draft pick Thatcher Demko. He’ll be in camp with the guy who scored a hattrick against him to knock Boston College out of the Frozen Four, Daniel Ciampini.
  • There will be three 5’9″ players at camp: two invitees and Jordan Subban. Please, someone take a picture of them next to 6’7″ Nikita Tryamkin.
  • One of those 5’9″ players is one of the most intriguing invitees at camp, Curtis Valk. He’s coming off back-to-back 90+ point seasons for the Medicine Hat Tigers. He just finished his over-age season, meaning he’s looking for a pro contract. Though majorly undersized, he’d be an intriguing target for a cheap, two-way contract to see if he can overcome his size to become, at the very least, an effective top-six forward in Utica.
