NHL Lowers the Boom on Hanzal!!!
Shanahan says enough is enough and cracks down on Hanzal! No mention of the crosschecks that took out Santorelli or H. Sedin but that deliberate cross check to the face crossed the line. Citing past suspensions such as Kassian getting 8 games for careless use of the stick, Edler 3 games for not taking a better angle to deliver a body check, and Hansen 1 game for reaching for an airborne puck...
"The NHL's Department of Player Safety has decided to fine Martin Hanzel...one ...million ...dollars....'err, we mean five thousand bucks."

I'm so relieved to see more examples of consistency within this fair prism of league justice and also that the NHL is truly serious about ending violence to the head and cares about concussions. This $5,000 fine will be a deterrent league wide. Hanzal and all other players will never cross check a player in the face after this latest asskicking by Shanahan. Its just not worth it...or-is-it? hmmmm

Don't forget, it was called a "high stick" in the ruling not a cross check (to the face).
This alone probably indicates NHL discipline is done via box scores rather than watching the footage of the game.

I'm surprised they even looked at it. Does the fact Booth is expected to play tonight factor into his decision, i.e., no serious injury on the play?
The only HW the Canucks need

Calling this a highstick is akin to driving a player from behind into the boards and calling it interference.
HW, its always optics w/ this crew. I wonder if the NHL would have suspended Boychuck if Raymond left on a stretcher? (which he definitely should have). I've long said it, and the NHL weighs far too heavily on the "outcome" or injury when considering discipline. This goes to the Lupul flying elbow. If you want to stop this shit then you can stop it by getting serious. Ramp up the suspensions to a level that will get the player's attention. Include obvious intended headshots w/ zero tolerance aside from accidents and incidental contact. Don't weigh so heavily on whether players miss games; this is a sport where players often play hurt.
What is a $5,000 fine to an NHL player, like fining the average joe $5.

Pretty funny Shanny didn't take all 3 cross-checks, injuring 3 Canucks into account
... when you consider he took Kessel's slashes from a previous game into account in the Kessel suspension!
You've gotta laugh!!!
Also note Kessel did not injure anyone and he was a first-time offender...

Even funnier when you consider a suspension "for the remainder of the preseason" is probably a welcome holiday. How is that even punishment?, there's not even any forfeited salary.Strangelove wrote:Pretty funny Shanny didn't take all 3 cross-checks, injuring 3 Canucks into account

Injury is a huge factor. It is specifically written into the CBA. I'm surprised Hanzel got fined.Hockey Widow wrote:I'm surprised they even looked at it. Does the fact Booth is expected to play tonight factor into his decision, i.e., no serious injury on the play?
Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.
