Draft Pick Trades 2008-2013

Post by Southern_Canuck »

I'm always fascinated by trades involving draft picks - wondering what kind of player they turned out to be?

In cases where the Canucks traded away a draft pick, it's likely that they wouldn't have selected the same player that the other team picked, but it is still interesting to see how that player turns out in comparison to the player traded...

It's still early, but here are players that were picked with Canuck picks 2008-2013 (shortened it to 1st to 4th round picks):

(2nd round 2013) Philippe Desrosiers (G) 8-16-1995 playing in QMJHL
(2nd round 2012) Chris Tierney (C) 7-1-1994 playing in OHL
(3rd round 2012) Frederik Andersen (G) 10-2-1989 playing in NHL
(4th round 2012) Josh Anderson (LW) 5-7-1994 playing in OHL (invited to Canada WJC 2014 camp)
(4th round 2012) Taylor Leier (LW) 2-15-1994 playing in WHL (invited to Canada WJC 2014 camp)
(2nd round 2011) Mario Lucia (LW) 8-25-1993 playing in NCAA
(1st round 2010) Quinton Howden (C) 1-21-1992 playing in AHL
(2nd round 2010) Petr Straka (RW) 6-15-1992 playing in AHL
(3rd round 2010) Austin Levi (D) 2-16-1992 playing in ECHL
(3rd round 2009) Brayden McNabb (D) 1-21-1991 playing in NHL
(3rd round 2008) Josh Brittain (LW) 1-3-1990 playing in AHL
(4th round 2008) Justin Jokinen (RW) 11-25-1989 not in hockey

No superstars yet - well, maybe Frederik Andersen has looked pretty good for Anaheim - but the Pahlsson trade has the potential to look really bad in retrospect. And the Ballard trade stinks, of course!

It's not so much the multitude traded picks who amount to nothing in the NHL that kill you, but the one or two over the years who do become notable players who can bite a team in the ass - especially if they turn out to be the kind of player the organization could have used during said career.

As for Howden, I think the jury's still out on him at this point but yet-to-be-realized potential still beats a bought-out square peg.

Who knows what Gillis and his clowns would have drafted had they kept the picks. My beef was how gillis justified trading the 1st to florida cause they didnt like what was available, lol.

Brayden McNabb is one of buffalo's top prospects and they have a lot of good prospects. He was called up a couple weeks ago

The funny one is how the two 4th round picks we gave up for Pahlsson and what players were picked with those picks seemingly are the best of the bunch. Goes to show you can still find beauts later in the draft, ie Bieksa.

Cheers

Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.

I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.

There isn't a team out there or a GM who has ever drafted that hasn't made mistakes. There are only so many sure fire draft picks available every year, some years more than others. Yes some teams and some GMs are better at it given their entire body if work.

There are some teams who do a whole lot worse that MG in trading picks and picking questionable picks. Unless MG is picking number 1 overall, every GM picking ahead of him will have overlooked the same players he has.

Having said that, I do believe this is the time to hold onto picks and continue to re-stock. We have heard so much about our so called window to win. Well to me that window ends when the twins retire and MG has to have a plan to replace their production. It isn't the time to throw caution to the wind and go for that home run player at deadline day to get us over the top. That time may come again in a year or two but not right now.

I am not opposed to trading picks but it has to be for a franchise type player, not a late 20's early 30's career stagnating about to be on the downside if his career player. I don't want to end up like Calgary. I don't want to be like Edmonton. And I certainly don't want to be like the flyers, always changing direction one disappointing year after another.

I also think that a legitimate top six who can score would help this team immensely. None of the players we have traded or draft picks we gave up would fit that bill right now, none of them. For sure some have immense future potential written all over them but none of them would be in our line up right now.

The only trade of MG's I would like back is the Ballard deal. At the time, and for most of his tenure with the Canucks I supported the deal. I still think he was fucked over by AV and I still think he was a better option for game seven then a banged up Ehrhoff or Edler or two broken ribs Glass. Be that as it may, in retrospect and with the benefit of knowing how the Ballard saga ended it is easy to see it was a mistake.

The Booth trade has never hurt the team, other than cap space this season. MG has made mistakes, no question but name one GM that hasn't. I'm not sure if I have the confidence in him to make a good trade but he has shown the propensity for a few good waiver pick ups, college FA, and bottom 6 forwards. Some of his trade deadline day pick ups have also been good pick ups. He has not been a total bust but nor has he dazzled with brilliance.

I would give him two more years after this season to get us that cup and show a significant improvement in getting his draft picks into the line up. Failing those things I would hope we turn the page and get someone who can set the table for when the twins retire, and the rest of our core are all UFA.
The only HW the Canucks need

Let's be honest, I am too biased to answer this question!

Anyway, Howden is only 21 - swift skating winger with size... maybe he is the next Justin Williams or maybe he is the next David Booth?

Oh, and remember in 2006 when a desperate Dave Nonis traded all those picks for help at the deadline? Ever wonder if any of those selections made the NHL?

Bryce Swan (26) no longer in hockey
Jhonas Enroth (25) playing in the NHL
Vladimir Zharkov (25) playing in the KHL
T.J. Miller (27) no longer in hockey

Out of two 2nds, a 3rd, and a 4th, only Enroth has carved out an NHL career.

Traded 2nd round pick (#38 Bryce Swan) (the pick was previously acquired from NYI for Brent Sopel) and Brett Skinner to Anaheim for Keith Carney and rights to Juha Alen
Traded 2nd round pick (#46 Jhonas Enroth) to Buffalo for Mika Noronen
Traded 3rd round pick (#77 later traded to New Jersey who selected Vladimir Zharkov) and Tomas Mojzis to St. Louis for Eric Weinrich
Traded 4th round pick (#107 T. J. Miller) to New Jersey for Sean Brown
Traded Steve McCarthy to Atlanta for Atlanta’s 4th round pick in 2007 (#115 Niklas Lucenius)

Given 2014 isn't supposed to be that great of a draft year, i'd be ok to trade that 1st away in a package deal, but only for a young scoring forward like Evander Kane who actually could be available.

Or a conditional 1st for Vanek or Stastny pending they re-sign.
Can the Canucks just win a Cup within the next 5 years.

A LOOK AT THE DRAFTS UNDER MIKE GILLIS

2008 Entry 10 1 Cody Hodgson C Brampton Battalion [OHL] 170 43 52 95 42
2008 Entry 41 2 Yann Sauve D Saint John Sea Dogs [QMJHL] 5 0 0 0 0
2008 Entry 131 5 Prabh Rai C Seattle Thunderbirds [WHL]
2008 Entry 161 6 Mats Froshaug C Linkoping Jr. [Sweden]
2008 Entry 191 7 Morgan Clark G Red Deer Rebels [WHL]

- Coho was a good pick, although Ottawa scooped up Eric Karlson a few picks after. Boy, if we all thought Ehrhoff was a good PP guy, imagine if we have Sweedish Noris D-man Karlson playing with the Sedins? We all know we turned CoHo into Kassiassian and the jury is still out on Zack.
- Sauve looks like a minor leaguer and is Rai even playing hockey anymore?

2009 Entry 22 1 Jordan Schroeder C U. of Minnesota [WCHA] 34 3 6 9 6
2009 Entry 53 2 Anton Rodin W Brynas Jrs. (Sweden)
2009 Entry 83 3 Kevin Connauton D Western Michigan University [CCHA] 5 0 1 1 2
2009 Entry 113 4 Jeremy Price D Nepean Raiders [CJHL]
2009 Entry 143 5 Peter Andersson D Frolunda Jrs. (Sweden)
2009 Entry 173 6 Joe Cannata G Merrimack College [H-East]
2009 Entry 187 7 Steven Anthony L Saint John Sea Dogs [QMJHL]

- Jury is out on Schroeder. He had some nice moments in the NHL last year, but is probably too small to be a regular NHLer. Being injured doesn't help.
- Rodin looks like a bust. Played for the Wolves for a couple of years, but couldn't really produce and I think he decided to go back to play in Sweeden.
- I think we traded Connauton in Derek Roy deal. Connauton has some good skillz, but is probably not good enuff defensively to play regularly in the NHL.
- Andersson and Cannata are playing on our farm. Both are not really pushing for NHL jobs right now. Cannata seems to be the backup to Eriksson as well.

2010 Entry 115 4 Patrick McNally D Milton Academy [Mass.]
2010 Entry 145 5 Adam Polasek D Prince Edward Island Rocket [QMJHL]
2010 Entry 172 6 Alex Friesen C Niagara IceDogs [OHL]
2010 Entry 175 6 Jonathan Iilahti G Blues Jrs (Finland)
2010 Entry 205 7 Sawyer Hannay D Halifax Mooseheads [QMJHL]

- MG traded all our top picks in the first 3 rounds in various deals. McNally was hyped to be a good prospect, but he had some problems in college (cheating on a test or something), which got him suspended in hockey. Seriously though, what can u expect for a 4th round pick?

2011 Entry 29 1 Nicklas Jensen R Oshawa Generals [OHL] 2 0 0 0 0
2011 Entry 71 3 David Honzik G Victoriaville Tigres [QMJHL]
2011 Entry 90 3 Alexandre Grenier R Quebec Remparts [QMJHL]
2011 Entry 101 4 Joseph Labate C Holy Angels Academy (Minn.)
2011 Entry 120 4 Ludwig Blomstrand L Djurgarden Jrs. (Sweden)
2011 Entry 150 5 Frankie Corrado D Sudbury Wolves [OHL] 3 0 0 0 0
2011 Entry 180 6 Pathrik Westerholm L Malmo Redhawks [Swe-1]
2011 Entry 210 7 Henrik Tommernes D Vastra Frolunda HC [SEL]

- Jensen has looked good at times, but suffered a setback with his injury. With zero goals in 16 games so far this season, he is not looking very promising.
- Corrado looks like a good late steal as he played in the NHL playoffs for us last season. Potential to be a Tanev type player

2012 Entry 26 1 Brendan Gaunce C Belleville Bulls [OHL]
2012 Entry 57 2 Alexandre Mallet C Rimouski Oceanic [QMJHL]
2012 Entry 147 5 Ben Hutton D Nepean Raiders [CCHL]
2012 Entry 177 6 Wesley Myron F Victoria Grizzlies [BCHL]
2012 Entry 207 7 Matthew Beattie R Exeter [N.H. H.S.]

- Gaunce looks like a good pick, although he never made the Team Canada juniors.
- Not sure what's up with Mallet. He has 1 goal in 16 games for the comets. Spent some time with the ECHL last year. Looking like a bust.

2013 Entry 9 1 Bo Horvat C London Knights [OHL]
2013 Entry 24 1 Hunter Shinkaruk C Medicine Hat Tigers [WHL]
2013 Entry 85 3 Cole Cassels C Oshawa Generals [OHL]
2013 Entry 115 4 Jordan Subban D Belleville Bulls [OHL]
2013 Entry 145 5 Anton Cederholm D Rogle Jrs. (Sweden)
2013 Entry 175 6 Mike Williamson D Spruce Grove Saints [AJHL]
2013 Entry 205 7 Miles Liberati D London Knights [OHL]

- Potentially Gillis's best draft. BoHo, Shinkaruk and Cassels looks like good prospects with Subban a possible darkhorse. Still need a few years to properly gauge how these picks turn out.

Overall Evaluation:

I would say overall, the drafting under MG has not been very good, granted the Canucks usually finished near the top of the conference and had 2 President Trophies. Other than CoHo, there is no regular NHLer drafted by Gillis in the past 6 years. That's pretty bad, at least have a couple 2nd - 4th liners to show for it, maybe a 7th D-man. U would expect some players from the first 3 drafts to start pushing for NHL jobs now, but there's pretty much no one except CoHo who already graduated to the NHL. There is some promise in the recent 3 drafts (especially 2013), but it'll take a couple years still to properly judge it. Yes, Tanev and Lack are looking like great young players that Gillis acquired through free agency, but the purpose of this post is to judge the draft only and overall I would give Gillis a C letter grade in his drafting. I would have given him a D, but bumped him up a bit with the promise of the crop of 2013.

The thread title is called DRAFT PICK TRADES Bersonoozi.... no one gives a shit what you think of Gillis's drafting. Maybe start a seperate trade for that. As for your grades: I give you an F for humor and an F for spelling. Oh and I thought about it for enuff time before I graded you . Isn't that what I'm supposed to do laff at my own jokes ?? :P

Southern Canuck with all the draft picks the Canucks dealt away in 06 perhaps they could have chose Milan Lucic. Why are we discussing the players the other teams chose with the Canucks pick ?? The chance that the Canucks pick the same player as the team they traded the pick to would be very slim unless it is a top 10 pick.

BTW not a FLAME just an observation.

THINK ABOUT IT.
