Does Anyone Know Martial Arts?

The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. However, we all need a break some time so this forum is basically for anything off-topic, off the wall, or to just get something off your chest! This forum is named after poster Creeper, who passed away in July of 2011 and was a long time member of the Canucks message board community.

I took Karate from circa October 1988 to February 1990 under the guidance and tutelage of Sensei Rick Marshall at Shima Karate School.

I learned a lot during those 14 months and I think it goes without saying that one would have to bring both their lunch AND their dinner in a fistacuffs battle with me.

My roundhouse kicks are quite reknowned within my small Indian community.

My son took Karate for a couple years, one night when he 14 years old him and his friend got jumped by three drunk 20 year olds. My son's freind got beat bad but my son use Karate skills blocking and rolling and had a bump on his head and partial shiner. Those guys thought they were someone else and said sorry. But if not for the Karate he would of got a beating that night.

@ Jovorock - sorry to hear man. Had I been there, he probably wouldn't have had to have experienced that as I would have kept him safe.

Not kidding here.

Had a chinese friend back in the day.

Ummm... the East Van day.

And this actually worked...

We got challenged by two guys on the street one night.

Okay so I did all the talking as usual while buddy went silent + serious.

I'm telling these punks nicely: "Trust me you guys, you DON'T wanna do this".

They kept yapping off while buddy takes off his jacket and hands it to me.

Funniest thing ever! We did NOT rehearse this...

I take his jacket while buddy faces them and goes into his Bruce Lee prep mode.

He stands there awaiting their first move while I just shake my head and stand down.

IT FUCKING WORKED!!

The punks decided to find someone else to terrorize.

Buddy and I laughed about that whenever we'd run into each other.

Now don't get me wrong, buddy and I were decent street-fighters and had zero fear (suicidal in fact!)

... this was just our way of having a little fun.

Buddy was built for a you-know-wot and was a black belt in Judo

(he was showing the punks a kung fu stance though). ;)

I never believed in that Judo bullshit but I'll admit one time buddy threw me about 10 feet

(he told me to take a swing at him, I ended up on my backside quicker than you can say Orient Express).

I could take him though, we both knew that, glad I never had to prove it though cuz we were buds. :look:

Fortunately they didn't expose the chink in your armour.
Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.

I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.

My best friend was Chinese...old school railroad...his dad was a Doctor and we had a blast with his medical books, freaky shyte...his little sister was probably the real reason I hung out there, cute little thing...maybe that's why I went through my EGGman phase... :eh:

This thread is awesome testoseronie, not glee at all..like tennis or that bromance crap.
When I learned Kung Fu my Dad was so proud of me. Nothing beats a father's pride in his son for a job well done raising him. Although there are some fathers ashamed of how their child turned out and how much shame they have brought upon their family...I am very sorry for them. :(

I don't know how much relevance my story will have here, but since Chinese Checkers was brought up, I figured I'd mention something here:

I actually had two good friends of mine from back in 2004 that were particularly good at Chinese Checkers. Oddly enough, they competed in online Chinese Checkers tournaments.......on Yahoo.com if I recall correctly. Their names were Gina and Ron. Since both were single and both had, what-I-perceived-to-be, a rather bizzare and unique hobby in Chinese Checkers, I figured that I'd try and introduce them to one another online. (coincidentally enough, both lived in Toronto).

I'd never met Ron offline, but I had known Gina in the outside world for quite sometime.

Anyhow, par my suggestion, the two started corresponding online. They seemed to be getting along quite well and so at some point, I think Gina asked if they wanted to meet in real life. Ron accepted.

Unfortunately, it turned out to be a major mistake, and Gina soon realized that Ron was nothing like his online personna. According to her, Ron was very egotistical, insecure, and had a lot of repressed anger issues stemming from an extremely ugly divorce. Gina wanted the friendship to work, but ultimately realized that it wasn't going to. She revealed this to me a little while after all this transpired. Apparently, Ron even attempted to stalk her a little before Gina threatened getting the police involved.

I ended up getting chatised quite heavily by Gina for introducing her to Ron. :scowl:

I guess the ultimate message I'm trying to relay here folks, is this: Be cool. Stay in School. And don't trust ANYONE that plays Chinese Checkers.
