I agree Farhan but do you honestly think the Canucks are contenders? I mean they've had a good start to the year but I don't think we can honestly say this team warrants contender status as it did around 2010 - 2012.
The team may prove to be one of the elites (hopefully) however at the time of the signing, it's no sure bet. Amazing loyalty shown by the Sedins yet again.
I certainly agree that they are not a contender like the 2010-2012 time frame. Defensively we seem to ok, the addition of Stanton and continued development of Tanev have gone a long way to providing depth on the back end. In net we are fine.
But up front we are a mess. Injuries are part of that mess for sure but have far too many bottom 6 and not enough top 6. We lack a true second line scoring threat. Seems the only time we didn't was that period of 2010-2012.
We are a mid pack team which makes us a playoff team. That, luck, health make us a contender once the playoffs start. But we are not up there with Chicago, SJS, and Boston type teams. MG still hasn't learned how to part with the assets you have to in order to get the pieces you need. He has made good mid level type deals but other than the luck of the Ehrhoff deal he hasn't scored a high impact trade success. He has done well with FA and in
re-signing players.
Getting the twins locked up for 4 more years is step one of getting us back to true contender status. He still has work to do for both the short term and the long term transition.
