I agree Farhan but do you honestly think the Canucks are contenders? I mean they've had a good start to the year but I don't think we can honestly say this team warrants contender status as it did around 2010 - 2012.

The team may prove to be one of the elites (hopefully) however at the time of the signing, it's no sure bet. Amazing loyalty shown by the Sedins yet again.

I certainly agree that they are not a contender like the 2010-2012 time frame. Defensively we seem to ok, the addition of Stanton and continued development of Tanev have gone a long way to providing depth on the back end. In net we are fine.

But up front we are a mess. Injuries are part of that mess for sure but have far too many bottom 6 and not enough top 6. We lack a true second line scoring threat. Seems the only time we didn't was that period of 2010-2012.

We are a mid pack team which makes us a playoff team. That, luck, health make us a contender once the playoffs start. But we are not up there with Chicago, SJS, and Boston type teams. MG still hasn't learned how to part with the assets you have to in order to get the pieces you need. He has made good mid level type deals but other than the luck of the Ehrhoff deal he hasn't scored a high impact trade success. He has done well with FA and in
re-signing players.

Getting the twins locked up for 4 more years is step one of getting us back to true contender status. He still has work to do for both the short term and the long term transition.
The only HW the Canucks need

The contract is "fair value". Period.
I'm genuinely confused about your post.. you basically articulated exactly what a hometown discount is ("they wanted to stay here and the deal is good for both sides," ie. they didn't want to leave so they didn't ask to be paid every cent the market will bear).

Are you saying the Sedins would/could not have got more, because everyone other than Tiger and Pauser would probably disagree...

I don't think too much more work is needed to be honest.

-Our goaltending and defense should pretty much be set for the next 3-4 years.
-Sedins' and Kesler should be set.

It's just a matter of Horvat, Shinkaruk, and Kassian becoming significant impact players soon enough, so they can be good while the twins, Kesler, and Luongo are just as good as they are now. (similar to that non-existent 2004/05 season where the twins might have been great that year, while the WCE might have had one final year of being at their peak).

Bring in one good shut down center or top 6 winger with the freed up cap space next year, and I think that's pretty much all we need.

I don’t think anybody should be surprised they re-signed, but it’s good to see this get finalized sooner rather than later so we don’t have to suffer through the talking heads turning this into a big issue. The countdown to 1,000 points for Hank begins now.

$7M per is definitely a discount over what they could have gotten on the open market. Hank would have easily commanded $8m+ as a UFA. Teams would have been lining up.

$7M puts them at tied for the 17th highest cap hit in the 2014-15 season, which is very fair from the Canucks perspective as these guys should remain in the top 20 in scoring.

The four year term is pretty favourable as well. By the end of that term Horvat and Shinkaruk will hopefully be making major impacts by then, not to mention others like Cassels, Gaunce and Jensen.

All in all this is a good day for the Canucks. The window is not closing imminently. Now, that forward depth riddle needs to be solved…my only concern is I hope Gillis remains committed to stockpiling forward prospect depth.

Oh, also good to see that Torts hasn’t scared them off! :P

I do think that they signed for what they did as they come in a packaged deal.

remember this is not your normal deals, this is for 2 players.

From my post on Hockes Future where I am Jimslob:

"Any word on the structure?

I'm guessing something like 10, 7, 6 and 5 in years 1 to 4.

Possibly 9, 7.5, 6.5, 5 or something like that.

Damn I am happy about this signing!"

The best two players we have ever had!

Bure was up there and definately more explosive and exciting, but he was not around long enough and everyone loves Linden but he is a level several tiers below the Bure and the Sedins in my opinion.

For a Cup?!? Not a chance, we need way more than that. We still have a goalie whom I'm very happy with in the reg season but can't trust at all in the playoffs and unless Lu demands a trade again our goaltending won't change anytime soon. We added a top 6 player last year and still got swept in the first round. We don't have a true stud d-man that almost every Cup team has. Our top scorers are still way too inconsistent with their production in the playoffs. Should I go on??...

To me the only way this team will be a true contender again is by having at the very least 3 or 4 legitimate scoring threats emerge, to take the pressure of the Twins and Kes, not unlike what's happening down in San Jose where people don't focus on Thornton and Marleau anymore. They've added so much depth in the past couple years with homegrown talent, but yet they still don't have a Cup so what's it going to take for us?? Even if the Kassians, Shinkaruks and Horvats do reach the level of Couture/Pavelski/Hertl, it has to happen soon if it happens at all, not 3-4 years from now. There's no hope of landing a Norris type d-man anytime soon and as mentioned we'll have to live with our goaltending warts in the playoffs for the unforeseeable future so to me the only way we can get over the hump is by adding a lot of depth to be able to outscore our deficiencies. Right now we're nowhere near that and while a top-6 plus forward or a shutdown center can certainly improve the team, it's not even close to enough to make us a contender.

All we need is a vet sniper rental for this season/playoffs and/or a 2nd/3rd line center so Kesler can play more on the BeastModo line.
Can the Canucks just win a Cup within the next 5 years.

Where the hell is Lever and his 'we aren't an Elite Team' argument when you need him?

Correct me if I am wrong but can we add 'the kids' in the post-season after their playoffs end?

I like being a mid-pack team with a trade deadline addition rather than a top tier team with a lot of expectations.
I love every move Jim Benning makes 8-)

Prospects joining playoff chase in NHL, AHL

As the season winds down for the NCAA, Canadian juniors and European leagues, top prospects are free to join the NHL organizations that have drafted them, or in the case of undrafted NCAA players, sign free-agent contracts.
Yeah it's nice having the core fully locked up, now MG can work on surrounding them with various players every season to fit under the cap and hope for the best/health in the playoffs, plus find some miraculous momentum that's needed to go far in the post season.

Who were they going to sign this summer ? Who were they going to bring in that puts up over a ppg regular season and close to that in the playoffs for a combined cap hit of 14 million.
