This is a bad contract. It's more money than Luongo and its lasting until he's 34.

This guy doesn't have the pedigree of RL*, and he's going to be as old as RL is now when it expires. And, we have all seen the decline in RL's game since age 31.

In summary, this a great contract.

*Of course, he does have a Stanley Cup ring.

Pfft.....boat anchor of a deal. If the Hawks defensive or offensive games struggles, look for the entire hockey world to be pointing at the most overpaid goaltender in the NHL.

If it's all about the Stanley Cup ring, then why did Niemi sign for less than $4M with San Jose in a hockey world that had a higher cap?

So yes, great contract from our perspective.

Actually this contract expires when Crawford is 35.5 years old.

Mondi wrote:This guy doesn't have the pedigree of RL*, and he's going to be as old as RL is now when it expires.

Roberto Luongo is presently 34.5 years old.

And, more importantly, Cory Crawford should sniff Roberto Luongo's jock strap.

I think most of us would disagree with that statement.

For example, his save percentage has actually gone UP since that particular point in time.

2013-14 is going to be one of Roberto's best seasons ever and I'm going to be right here feeding you crow. Image

Luongo was the man in 2007-2009. And he had a pretty good year in 2011.

Since then he's been declining.

I think we're in agreement its a bad deal for Chi. And that Luongo is/was the better player.

And we'll talk after the season about any crow.

Oh, now he's been declining since 2011??

I'll have you know that since New Year's Day 2012 Luongo's save percentage is exactly 0.91835310537

Which is pretty much his career average. :mex:

The only thing that has been declining in regards to Luongo's performance is general public perception.

And that my friend is a media-created illusion.

Luongo is as good right now as he's ever been.

GREAT goaltenders, like fine wine, tend to get better with age

... or at least until they reach their late 30s.

If you count Kipper (hasn't signed retirement papers yet) Lou is lucky number 13. :D

Unfortunately for us...the rest of the world calls it television :wow:

Docster...I can appreciate that you've evolved into the new defender of all that is Luongo around here but aren't you just the littlest bit worried about how he's going to look come April? The guy has a resume filled with epic playoff meltdowns and I just can't see any reason why these issues will have been put behind him.

Let's hope Eddy has some game come the playoffs because one more post season implosion like chicago x3 or Boston would likey see RLs NHL future on thin ice. And yes I mean this.

In 64 playoff games the guy has had 6 meltdowns. In all but a couple of them the team in front of him was equally, if not more, culpable.

My only concern with Luongo come playoffs is that his career SV% is .916 in the playoffs versus .918 in the regular season. Ideally you want a goaltender who has numbers that get better thru April and May and into June.

Luongo's career save percentage in playoffs: 0.915936

Luongo's save percentage in 2013 playoffs: 0.91549295775

Believe it or not those are great numbers Dan.

The "meltdowns" actually boil down to a fraction of his total playoff games.

Every goaltender has a bad game every once in awhile Dan.

Is that alright with YOU Danny-boy?

IS IT??!!

Luongo OBVIOUSLY must have been phenomenal for approximately the same fraction of games

(otherwise his career playoff save percentage wouldn't be 0.915936).

NOW, if Luongo had a coach with balls enough to yank him early in a "meltdown" game

... we may not be having this conversation.

Daniel, did you just happen to miss 3 dozen playoff games in which Roberto Luongo was the star of the game?

Or are you just a media-brainwashed schlep who doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground?

(no offense intended)

Like I say, most coaches would've yanked Lou earlier in those "meltdown" games.

But yeah AV didn't have any balls.

This was one of the Great Strangelove's reasons for demanding AV's head on a plate once upon a time.

Which would make him ball-less and head-less.

Also, if the theorized yankings had occurred, Lou's playoff numbers would theoretically be better. :D

My favourite part of that list is that the Nonis contract from 2006 and its $6.75 million cap hit would still be #4 after 8 years of cap inflation

Enjoy Nonis while you can, Leafs fans! David Clarkson and Tyler Bozak are already big fans!

Of the 11 more expensive goalies, who would you take in place of Luongo? I think Quick is the only one for me.
