All Gillis said about Edler was that he was getting calls about him and that you are always listening to calls about every player and considering options presented to you if you think it could make your team better. He never once said he had considered any of the offers regarding Edler.

It was the media and fans that got the whole Edler is trade bait rumor going.....

Multiple reports on deadline day, not just Nonis' meat puppet, were saying the Canucks were listening to offers on Edler. That = on the market. Why you'd admit to that, unless you want the "Bobby Ryan" treatment, is beyond me. Trade him, or don't. Don't dangle him in public.

FUUUUUCK

There was no offseason to do a deal for Luongo. When the hell are people going to get it through their thick skulls and into their pea brains.

We all understood it while it happened but now most have completely forgotten.

With the looming lockout there were no takers until the new CBA was know. Once the CBA was done, there was no time at the start of the season to do a deal. Both 'tenders had seesaw years and hence both where kept around as insurance of one vs the other.

Actually... there was. It wasn't long, but there was.

Depending on who you believe, Toronto Sun had Luongo rejecting trades to Toronto and Chicago, holding out for Florida. Some said Florida's ownership would take on Luongo's contract, but the Canucks wanted too much.

There were rumours at the draft last year that Luke Schenn was offered for Luongo. Or the Kadri++ rumours.

Either way, Topper, there WAS an offseason last year. The lockout DID affect Luongo's trade value. Mike Gillis WAS left holding the bag when everything went against the Canucks in the new CBA. He's done a decent job of managing that (trading HIS franchise goalie for a top-10 pick).

Here's how I see it:
Gillis wanted a TON for Lou (can't fault him, but he probably misread the goalie market), CBA worked against him (can't fault him), couldn't give Lou away at the deadline (can't fault him), and traded away the future franchise goalie for a top-10 pick (we'll see).

And Gillis also said that the calls were coming in regarding Schneider when he was shopping Luongo. Nothing wrong with admitting that they were taking calls on a guy. He even said, they take calls on almost every player.

Through his actions, Gillis and AV played who they thought was their best goalie. He anointed Cory Schneider because it seemed to fit. Now he's eating that decision. He dealt his no.1 goalie for a top-10 pick, and now he's keeping a goalie he tried (and failed, despite promises) to trade.

We'll see how it works out, but the Canucks/Luongo chapter is leaning towards "toxic" as opposed to "legendary".

You just backed your side by linking to an article that uses media claims as source material.

A deal in place in October 2012 that was just waiting for ratification and implementation of an as of yet non existent CBA???

Are you kidding?

GM's were prohibited from discussing trades with players during the lockout. Lou had a NTC. Do you think for even a minute that Gillis would risk stepping outside the NHL's rules behind closed doors when it would have to involve Nonis and Burke?

But regardless, you are still, at the root of it all, going by what the media spouted off during the early doldrums of a lockout.

Who's the idiot?

Gillis did not make the decision to play Cory. Vigneault did. Gillis has said that he doesn't want to pull the strings and dictate to a coach other than to set the overall team philosophy of up tempo hockey. When he refers to "we" in his interviews he is taking blame for the organization as a whole. The only thing he's eating is that he thought there would be a market for Lou during the off season. And if memory serves, he didn't promise a trade for Lou. He promised he would move Luongo somewhere where Louie would be "the guy".....technically, he just moved Luongo (back) into that exact situation.

The lockout started September 15th. Wake up. Gillis had All Summer to trade Luongo. Christ... it's not even summer yet.

Who's the idiot?

Wear it.

Luongo won't retire.
Water boy won't buy him out next year.
Luongo will report to camp and say all the right things
Luongo will have a monster year.
If the Canucks find that they have an heir apparent in the system MG will continue to try and trade Luongo after the season, if Luongo still wants to go.

Thats the story, but it isn't sexy enough for the media pundits to report on.

MG had a small window in which to trade Luongo. We have no idea if Luongo really vetoed any trades other than to Florida. He maintains he was never asked to waive his NTC which would indicate not but that could be semantics. After that small window closed Luongo was all but non-tradable. Hindsight is 20-20.
The only HW the Canucks need

From day one my biggest issue was the length of the contract but I understood it was needed to reduce the cap hit. under the old CBA the offers for Luongo would have plentiful and a deal would of been done. As much as I hate MG for making the stupid offer and maybe over estimating Luongo's worth he did get screwed by the new CBA.

The new CBA seems to be made to penalize teams who pissed off Buttman as they could of put in some grand father options for contracts already signed. Or allow teams to have 1 contract that can be re negotiated with both parties agreeing, etc etc etc.

Time to move on and see where this team goes in the next few years. Not expecting much but then in 2011 I didn't expect the team to make a SC run so who knows where this will go?
