Canucks take Anton Cederholm with #145

Post by tantalum »

6'2" 210lb Swedish D-man.

A big, fearless stay-at-home defenseman. Limited in terms of offensive upside and puck skills, but usually plays a simple and smart game. Not the fastest of skater, but decent mobility. Has the tools to become a reliable depth defenseman logging big minutes on the penalty kill. (EP, 2013)

another write-up:
Cederholm, Anton – LD – Rogle (SEL) – 6’2” 205
Anton has worked his way up the Rogle system playing U16, J18 and J20 games as a 15 year old and
didn’t look back playing in the J20 since with the exception of a few games here and there. He
worked his way up to the Elitserien this season playing 12 games in the men’s league. Unfortunately
Rogle was relegated to the Allsvenskan league for the 2013-2014 season. Anton is a big bodied
defenseman who loves to play physical and use his size to intimidate his opponents. He makes some
huge open ice hits and destroys opponents along the boards. In one on one situations he utilizes both
his stick and his body to make good plays and is reliable defensively. Anton moves the puck
incredibly well and shows the ability to create breakout situations moving the puck over two lines
and hitting his man tape to tape. He moves the puck intelligently in all three zones, but generally
doesn’t do much more offensively other than move the puck well. He needs to work on his skating
ability but it’s not a major concern at this point. He will never put up a ton of offensive points but he
plays a solid, mean, physical defensive game and chips in with his smart puck moving ability.

As is typical every draft pick is going to be a star if you read the write ups.

Even if his potential is only that of a poor-man's version of Willie Mitchell, that'll be at least a depth player that every team can use.

Sounds like a kid who came into growth early and took advantage of that, just worried he's been relying too much on just being big rather than being smart. His reported defensive reliability, hopefully, belies that worry and Thomas Gradin has shown some Swedish scouting mojo in the past.

(Argh, and why do people insist on using "utilize" instead of simply "use" or "uses" argh! It doesn't make you look more edumacated, it just makes you look like an everyone's a winner! overly-coddled smug undergrad.)

Portland Winterhawks selected Cederholm in the import draft. So hopefully we will see him in North America this season.
