Canada ahead 1-0 against Sweden after the first period.
Stamkos. Power play.

Sedins and Edler won't be here till Saturday.

Final score 3-0 for Canada. Stamkos, Schenn, J. Staal.

Frustrating. There aren't any natural goal scorers in Sweden's troop, and against a team like Canada, it really shows.
Sweden won the shots 17-5 in the third period, but they just couldn't get the puck past Smith.

Most likely these teams end 2nd and 3rd in the group, which would mean they face eachother again in the quarter final.
Till then we will have added three Canucks, hopefully that helps a bit, but I'm not sure Henrik, Daniel and Edler can make enough of a difference.

Any of you guys watch Finland vs Russia? Probably the best game of this tournament, but got kind of ugly as the Russians started to lose their temper in frustration over losing. I really think Kovalchuk should have gotten a suspension, but I guess just like in the NHL they are reluctant to suspend star players.....

Highlights:

Kovalchuk getting chippy...

... then losing it:

Edit: eight of the players on Team Finland play in the KHL, and I guess one explanation for Kovalchuk's behaviour is that they've started to get the hang on Russian trash talk and managed to get under his skin.

Impressed that slovenly Slovenia could take Canada to overtime, and this without Kopitar.

The Sedins will form a line with Dallas star Loui Eriksson as they take the ice against Denmark later today. Their only warm up game before the quarter final, in which Sweden will face Canada again, unless Belarus beats Switzerland.

Based on Sweden's performance so far, I don't really see us beating Canada this year, but then again, Canada's struggle against the mighty Slovenia does give some hope. You never know in hockey. It'll be fun to watch the twins play for Sweden anyway. I hope they put on a really good show against the Danes! 8-)

Caught a little of the third period. Hammer looking really smooth on the big ice. Almost Scott Niedermeyer-like. I'd like to see Dan back to more of a prominent role with the Canucks. He seemed a little in the shadows this season. In the 2011 Finals, when Hamhuis went off injured, I remember thinking that that might very well be the turning point in the series.

The Canucks need more Hammer.

Daniel and Henrik each had a goal and an assist as Sweden beat Denmark 4-2.
Loui Eriksson looked like a nice fit with them.
Edler also had an assist and made some nice hits.

Quarter finals on Thursday are now set:
Sweden vs Canada
Swiss vs Czechs
Finland vs Slovakia
Russia vs USA

Que the Edler for Eriksson rants.

I'm not sure how much bigger a role Hamhuis can really take on next year. He was hardly playing in the "shadows" this shortened season, #2 was simply the most consistent blueliner from start to finish. ie. Made the fewest errors while keeping the game simple and efficient.

What this team needs is a true #1 for Hamhuis to compliment.

Thanks for the note, Bladesofsteel. I was hoping someone would comment to this effect. It was only my impression that Hamhuis was a little invisible, and I admittedly don't see enough games to be as good a judge as some. With defensemen, if you don't notice them, that can sometimes be a good thing.

It's easy not to notice the guy who quietly goes about doing his job well, & doesn't get in trouble/controversy.
Hamhuis was on pace for a career year in 2013, with more points than any other Canuck Dman.

He was badly missed in the Bruins series.
Less Canucks embarrassment please.
