2013 Draft

Post by Cousin Strawberry »

Here is the top 75 players. I'd expect VCR to pick somewhere around 20-24... LW Kerby Rychel has excellent numbers and may be around for GMMG.... I watched some of the Rockets/Blazers last night and right handed D-man Madison Bowey(#43) is an excellent talent. Too bad we dont have our 2nd :look:

Anyone know anything about these guys(other than the top 5 which wont be a factor for VCR)?

32. Samuel Morin 44 Rimouski (QMJHL) Jul. 12/95 D L 6'7/200 46 4 12 16 +10

This kid stands out.

Modest point total during the season but lead Rimouski d-men in points in their 6 game series against Gatineau with a goal and 6 assists. Big guys usually develop a little later as well.

Shoots left though!

I know that Seth Jones is buttman's marketing wet dream in anywhere but Calgary.... Therefore, I boldly predict Calgary will not win the lottery...

I believe Vancouver has all of their picks remaining except for our second, which of course we traded for Roy.

Getting a couple of picks in the Luongo return would be nice. Having two firsts this year would be fantastic.

While the Canucks prospect depth and Gillis' drafting record are much maligned, Gillis has done well in the first round. Hodgson, Schroeder, Jensen and Gaunce all are or look to be NHL capable players. Hopefully that continues! :)

So, aside from everything, what are our specific needs in a first round pick?

Goaltending doesn't look like an issue for at least 6-7 years, and on defense we have young Tanev who is the real deal, and Corrado who is a very promising late round pick.

Gaunce was drafted as centre, but has been an very productive winger for Belleville since he was moved over mid season. I personally have a bias towards drafting centres because they are so hard to find and you can never have too many. Centres can shift over to wing, but that's not a two way street. 15 centres are listed in TSN's top 30 rankings.

Van is without their 2nd as mentioned, as well as their 3rd round pick which was dealt two years ago for Higgins.

I suspect Gillis & co. already have a plan in place for the guys they will be moving forward with, and which ones they will move/release.

Example: If one of, or both Derek Roy and Mason Raymond are not in their plans, it is entirely possible they could be dealt at the draft or prior to unrestricted free agency. IIRC, Gillis did manage to acquire a 4th round pick for Ehrhoff from Snow .

Vancouver got that 3rd round pick back in the David Booth deal.

Any of you guys seen this kid play out west? His stats just popped out at me, is why I ask. He's a bit of a shrimp, but if MG deals off our current 1st-round smurf as part of a bigger deal, he may not be a bad replacement, no?

Isn't Kerby Rychel Warren's son? If so, his dad may have been a bit of a plumber but hopefully his toughness rubbed off on his boy.

Anybody find a scouting report on Freddy Gauthier? Having a sizeable C like that would never hurt but you wonder what they're seeing in a kid this big that has them rating him that low.

He's definitely an interesting one, scouts seemed very mixed on this kid, I've seen him ranked in the top 10 on some lists and bottom 20 on others. I like Centre - Lazar and RH D'man - Pulock as picks in our area.

^ A French guy? Isn't there a Western Canadian kid who would absolutely love to play pro hockey out on the west coast?

Klimchuk (C)? Morrissey (D)?

I really have no idea. I'd prefer a centre, and no Russians please.

I've seen Petan play in the W. He's a scoring machine this year, and is usually the best offensive player on the ice for either team.

I'd personally prefer to not draft another 5'9" guy though.

What's wrong with smurfs up the middle???

I hear ya, and wouldn't be overly comfy drafting Petan and having Schroeder in the system. Having said that, you look at what Roy is doing on the 3rd line and you have to consider that drafting a centre who can do that - even at 5'9" - is not the worst idea out there. Depending on who Gillis and Co. consider has the better upside and looking down the road at whose careers will be in decline and when that happens, maybe either one of them becomes a trading chip. The Sedins won't be 1st liners forever, so we may want to draft potential scoring machines now - even if they are smurfs.

I'll preface my comments by stating I am not a scout and have seen very few of these guys play a game! :D

All else being equal, the NHL is a physical league of 6'1" 200 pound guys and bigger. A smaller frame is a disadvantage and I think does reduce a prospect's chances. Don't get me wrong, I'm sub 6' myself and root for the little guys!

I think in the first round you draft "the best guy available". Don't pick off the board in the first round, and please don't draft any Russians. If the best guy availalbe when we pick is a defenseman, pick that guy. If it's a centre, pick him. If all else is equal, I would pick the centre. I certainly wouldn't be drafting a goaltender in the first round, though.

Some guys fall from their final rankings for one reason or another. Isn't that what happened with Schroeder? His final ranking as a North American skater was 5th. He fell to Vancouver at #22 due to concerns over size, if I recall correctly, and Gillis drafted the best guy available at the time. It may have been a good move, we'll see. It wasn't a great draft class outside of Kane, Duchene and Tavares.

Anyway, if we end up with too many quality NHL centres down the road, that ain't a bad thing and can be dealt with then. Seriously, is there a team in the league that has too many quality centres? No. It took Schroeder nearly four years to make it to the NHL, and even then he couldn't stick full time. He looks promising, but he still could not make it.
