Re: Canucks Acquire Derek Roy
The 2nd round pick for a halfway decent rental is a foregone conclusion and as long as the Canucks kept Jensen, Gaunce and Corrado, I was good with Connauton being traded.
Connauton is a left side D with defensive issues and a booming shot. He'll probably never be as good as either of Edler or Garrison and Corrado has replaced him on the prospect depth chart. Connauton may end up as a good PP specialist and a high risk/reward D-man but his potential is a 4/5 guy at best with defensive concerns.
Roy was near the top of my list for players MG should target simply because he's a skilled 2nd line C who isn't a liability defensively.
My hope was the Canucks would add an offensive C because of the uncertainty over Kesler's offensive production in the playoffs since he's played just over 10 games in a year. Although there's doubt over 17's offense, there's little doubt over his all around game once he gets a few games in. Kesler can slot back as the main match-up C and soak up big defensive responsibilities while chipping in the odd even-strength offense and standing in front of the net on the PP.
I'd love to see Gillis add someone like Ott, who can also take defensive responsibilities or line up on the wing to give this team even more versatility and options.
I didn't think the Canucks had a cup chance unless they added an offensive C, but now that they have, all bets are off. I'm very interested to see how Roy fits in.

Roy was a 1st line center in Buffalo for $4 mil but really isn't up to it.herb wrote:Price seems acceptable at the moment, but of course we'll see how it works out.
Roy's production has been declining year over year. Is that a case of poorer quality linemates, regression or being utilized in different situations?
He should be a 2nd line center.
We can't afford to sign him if he goes in the $5 - $6 mil range, unless both Ballard & Booth are gone, and Raymond doesn't re-sign.
Anyways, that's too much to be paying for a 3rd line center

Woohooo, MG looks like the genius he is!Mondi wrote:As per Kyprios.
For a 2nd rounder.
Ah yes, another small forward. At least he's offensive.

Maybe this means Gillis/AV are serious about moving Kesler to RW - where his shoot first approach would be more effective.
Re: Canucks Acquire Derek Roy
Just coming here to post this. It sure would be nice to see Kesler beast mode against other teams tops lines, and have Roy play 2C. Kesler to the wing on the second line could work again too ala Sundin.coco_canuck wrote: Kesler can slot back as the main match-up C and soak up big defensive responsibilities while chipping in the odd even-strength offense and standing in front of the net on the PP.
sedin-sedin-burrows
Raymond-Kesler/Roy-Kesler/Hansen
Higgins-Roy/Kesler-Schroeder?/Hansen?
Holy moly....four NHL caliber center? Actual options now.

Re: Canucks Acquire Derek Roy
It seems like only yesterday Connauton was in the running for the Calder....
Anyways, a second round pick and middling prospect. About what you'd expect.
I don't think you move Kesler to the wing. He'd end up taking a bigger beating than he normally does and, well, he isn't that far removed from a Selke.
With a healthy roster Roy gives the canucks three lines that can score and perhaps most importantly it gives them a decent center for the second PP unit.

Considering Robyn Regehr and Douglas Murray cost two 2nd round picks, this deal doesn't look too bad.
Finally some help down the middle.

Re: Canucks Acquire Derek Roy
Roy played mostly with Eriksson this season and Cole since he was acquired.
He appears to have been matched up with alot of top 2 lines/and top 2 D pairings this season with his most ice time coming against Carter/Doughty in LA and Tanguay/Wideman/Brodie in Calgary followed by Suter/Gilbert/Bouchard in Minny and Paranteau in Colorado.

Another factor here is this takes a (wee) bit of the heat off Gillis in the Luongo situation. Now he looks to be trading more from a position of power/seller rather than desperate to fill a hole up front. Ball's in his court again.

Actually Connauton's play made Connauton expendable (smile).
The guy simply wasn't going to be able to play defensively at this level.
A fairly late second for a rental at a position we desperately needed.
Big upgrade as Roy is way better then Ebbet or Schroeder.
Re: Canucks Acquire Derek Roy
Great pickup - now it is in MG hand to keep him.
no idea on how to make it work but assume that Ballard is gone and then the question is Roy better than Booth?
Positions can work themselves out later as a 2nd line with Roy/Kesler/??? looks pretty good and we will have a decent centre once Kesler gets hurt again

Fair enough! I haven't seen either player much, but from all reports Corrado's stock has shot through the roof and Connauton's is in the gutter. As you say, defensive play is Connauton's problem.Potatoe1 wrote: Actually Connauton's play made Connauton expendable (smile).

Roy should be a massive upgrade over Schroeder, Ebbett and Burrows...

Speak of the devil, Schroder has been sent down. Hopefully Shredder rips it up in the AHL now. He has surpassed my expectations for him this season, but he is clearly not a playoff answer for this gorup.
