So NHL teams own the actual franchise and move them around at will? Is this something new?

No idea of the process that must be followed but I'm sure the AHL must have to approve moves??

Though it does seem that teams move around fairly often.

NHL teams don't necessarily own the franchises I don't think - the Wolves and historically the Moose were independently owned franchises and surely there must be others as well.

That being said obviously the Jets now own the St Johns Ice Whatevers, rumour has it the Canucks may end up owning the Peoria franchise and I think MLSE owns the Marlies and the Flyers own their affiliate as well (but I'm not certain).
