International Politics & Stuff

The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. However, we all need a break some time so this forum is basically for anything off-topic, off the wall, or to just get something off your chest! This forum is named after poster Creeper, who passed away in July of 2011 and was a long time member of the Canucks message board community.

OK, let me dumb it up for you. If I put it this way:

I can understand that given the circumstances, people raised in Ontario may root for the Toronto Maple leaves.

Now, this does not mean that I'm good with it, that I agree with it or that I condone it.
It simply means that I can understand it; that my empathic resources are big enough for me to grasp that it is fairly reasonable for some one with that background to end up making something that I'm sure we can both agree would feel completely wrong for us.

So, given the circumstances, people may become Leaf fans, drop bombs, etc.
I can understand it, but it doesn't mean I approve of it. Capice? :eh:
 All my offspring ARE NOT Leaf fans
I said may, not that they are doomed to be it by absolut (TM) certainty.

What? You're saying some of them aren't? :o

You had better provide some sort of link to back that up...

Time to perform CPR on this thread.

Did you all catch the news on the Greek elections?

Wow, nasty! I mean, every one knew that the voters were going to punish the coalition between socialists and conservatives that have been trying to enforce the rigourous cost cutting measures demanded by the EU and the IMF in return for granting Greece renewed loans so they do not have to default. But this... :hmmm:

OK, the conservatives came in first and the socialists third, but they've been reduced from ca 40% each to roughly 15% each, so they're basically being reduced to rubble, having less than one third of the seats in parliament combined.

In second place (also with some 15% of the vote) is a left wing radical party. And in Europe left wing means way left and radical is way radical. Compared to this crowd the socialists are a centrist party that may actually, as proven, form a coalition with the conservatives. :look:

In fourth place is a right wing populist party that wants to spend its way out of the crisis (as if they weren't already mired in debt) and plan to demand damages from Germany for WWII. Yeah, right. Like that's going to happen.

In fifth place we have the traditional communists, hammer, sickle and all. :wow:

And in sixth place, with 7 % of the vote, we have a nazi party, Golden Dawn, a party that is not only hostile to Jews, Muslims and homosexuals, but also claim to oppose the industrial revolution.

Good luck trying to form a government with a parliamentary majority out of this mess!

Sure, pulverising dead babies and sell as a cure for any imaginable disease (as in Strangelove's post in another thread) is disgusting, morally corrupt and thoroughly thoroughly nasty, but the current political situation in Greece is also nauseating and downright scary to boot.

You know, odd thing: 80% of Greeks polled say they want to keep the Euro, and yet two thirds have voted for parties that will make it impossible for them to do so. :|
Are they just stupid, or are they seriously hoping that the other EU members will gladly accept to have their tax payers settle the Greek debt so that the Greeks themselves won't have to do anything?
:stupid:

Terrible suspense tonight. Will Berlusconi rise from the dead and eat Europe's brain?

One shudders at the thought. Most Europeans cannot fathom that the Italians may once again vote for this shady character, but then controlling most of Italy's TV and radio stations and owning several of the major news papers plus the best football team may have something to do with it. :baaa:

Crossing my fingers that the Italians will vote sensibly tonight. But I'm worried. :|

Europe is changing so fast it is hard to keep up. I remember when I lived in England and the schools in some areas wanted kava and yams as well as other exotics provided at the school luncn. The school borad would have to fly them in each week and of course....money.

The French seem to be reacting to the huge influx of Muslims in their country, and I can kind of get it. Now I may be predjudice as I was in NYC on 9/11, but what about the immigrants responsibility to acculturate? Certainly we can have multi-cultural societies but there must be reciprocal efforts from those moving in. They are not in wherever they came from and the onus is on them to fit in just as much as it is on us to be welcoming. If we do not expect that from immigrants are we not treating them on a double standard that is the essence of predjudice?

Burkas etc. look great in the countries they come from. I sat around a campfire in Oman in 1974 and watched the fire reflect off copper masks while female eyes peeked out. Our schools and courts depend upon the concept of honesty and openess. How are you to trust when you cannot see the face?

I suppose religion is the justification and freedom of religion the main argument but I think religion is the dumb person's fall back position and besides, it has already caused enough bullshit on our planet. Should be outlawed and spirituality on a personal level take over.

Ahhh the ol' xenophobia strikes again....we're all immigrants here, did the Europeans try to fit into North America First Nations customs? Hmmmmmm?! No, they imposed its own. Like the life style you've become accustomed to? Yeah well, guess what? Those same Euro Immigrants that were our forbears stopped having kids because they were too busy trying to buy a bigger house in the 'burbs...well golly gee we gotta find us some low lifes to do the dredge work so our unsustainable growth model can burst it's puss bubble..

You granddaughters will be pop'n out gray babies soon enough and worshiping Mohamed 8-)
