So, who would you like in a return for Luongo

This new CBA helps the Canucks hold onto him now and I think that was something no one thought would happen. I at least imagined a scenario where we would have to buy guys out or make cap dumping trades before the season started. The landscape isn't like that. So I say, whats the rush now? Unless it is that "home run" type of deal? And it doesn't look like that will happen before the season starts.

Moving Luongo doesn't make a whole lot of sense, unless the return is great. We would need a capable backup for Schneider. We still need a fill-in at second line Centre, and it would be nice to add some youth in a deal. I don't think you're going to check all those boxes while getting adequate return. Sure, you could probably get Bozak, Reimer and Ashton... is that really what we're after for a goalie of Lou's calibre? A borderline 2nd C, a backup goalie and a mid-prospect? I think we can do better.

Dealing Luongo now might help mitigate the loss of Kesler, but it just creates another hole (albeit in a less important spot) in goal. I also can't help but think the best package might come out of Philly in the summer, if Bryzgalov shits the bed again this season...

I think a shortened season makes keeping Luongo more palatable. The real risk of injury and fatigue have to be weighing on MG and AV's minds. The what if scenario. So it really does become a cost benefit analysis at this point. Is there anything being offered that makes us butter than if we keep Luongo in a shortened season? Maybe there are some intriguing pieces that would be good for the team moving forward but what about this year? And is the risk of injury or fatigue so great that any return would pale in comparison to the catastrophe that would be a Cory let down?


In a full season you can ride the ebbs and flows. You have time to recover from a slow start or slumps. You have time to find a suitable back up and work younger players into the line up. You have time to fill holes.

This notion that keeping both would be a distraction or cause dissension in the dressing room is crap. And I agree the team needs a way to shut the media down. Luongo has said he will be patient and do what is best for the team. HE knows and understands he won't be given away. He also has a lot of respect for Cory. Cory will not be deterred having Luongo around. Why should he? The only time it may become a problem is the playoffs if both goalies are playing at the same level and winning at the same clip. Then I could see a little controversy, like we did last year.

I like everyone else have no idea what is being offered and how much of MG's bullishness is simply bullshi!@. If we end up having to give Luongo away or trade him for less than we think he is worth I'd rather that trade happen over the summer when we have an opportunity to improve the team in different ways and hopefully grab a UFA or 2 that will have an impact on the team. A giveaway now IMO would do far more harm to the team than waiting. If MG can make a good hockey deal now, one that addresses our immediate concerns and allows us some depth for the future, then I'm all for it. But I'm not in support of a deal just to get rid of Luongo.

I'm not sure I agree with this - and my reasoning is why have two top-notch goalies when only one can play? Yes I know for injury reasons, but I think I would much rather turn that other goalie into a center, winger od dman who will play every night and contribute. I don't think it's a great use of assets to have $10 million in salaries and two really good assets when only one can play at a time.

Lu will also be 34 when next season starts, meaning his value isn't going to be going up. If I'm Gillis I trade him for the best I can get before this season starts, or very shortly after it begins. Not saying that's what he will do, but that's what I think I would do in his position.

The current team already knows how to play when Luo and Schneid is between the pipes. The on-ice communication between our core forwards/defense/goalie is already established and familiar. I was talking to a buddy today and told him my prediction, which is Luongo stays this year and gets slightly more starts than Cory, around 25-30 GP in a shortened season. My buddy said Gillis announced that Cory was the starter when he got the new contract, but I don't recall that ever happening, has anybody heard an official statement that Cory is the starter? My recollection is Gillis said something to the effect of Cory is the future, but not that he's the "starter" if Luongo doesn't get moved.

I'd love to see Luongo stay, maybe even get the easier opponents like Cory has the last 2 years. That way you get a gauge of Cory's ability against top teams (yes I remember Boston and Chicago, two games out 50+ that he faced top opponents and won), as well as boost Luongo's trade value.

So I predict, Hodgsoning the shit out of Luongo, keep him until the market opens up post-buyouts and get the best return from a team other than Florida or Toronto.

I also remember remarking how tired the Nucks looked from top to bottom. Burr was doing absolutely nothing and lost his spot on the top line. Kes was playing injured and was a shadow of the player that we know he could be. Booth was skating around in circles really fast and also going nowhere really fast. We weren't getting any production from our defense). We became a one line team and as much as I love the Sedins, their shoulders aren't broad enough to shoulder an entire team. Despite all of that, our goaltending was solid as a rock.

Fast forward to today. We have the same core (minus Salo) and I expect Kesler to come back 100%. For me, it's about risk and reward and I just don't see this shortened season being the right time to make a major change to the team.

What's the downside of not trading Luo this season? I don't see a significant one. Yeah there is the media created goaltender controversy yadda yadda bullshit but at the end of the day, these guys are pros and they were one fucking game away from glory. I'm sure the players will be completely ok if Luo isn't traded.

For one he could play lousy and start the descent into being a mediocre goalie and you are stuck with a big salary and nowhere to bury it. For another it could be a mindfuck to the kid the team would like to get behind and move forward with.

If someone can provide the Canucks with a young centre with upside who can immediately play in the top 9, a good young prospect and a 2nd rounder or a 2014 1st rounder he should be all over that trade. The longer the team hangs onto Roberto the worse it may get.

I would take Mathias , Shore/Petrovic and a 2nd or a 2014 1st.The Leafs have little I am interested in unless they part with Jake the Snake. It isn't getting any better than that. People thinking we will get a Huberdeau or Coutourier or Rielly need to check themselves.

I see no evidence of Luo's descent into mediocrity. If shitty goaltending was the reason why we got bounced by the Kings last playoffs, your reason might have some legs. But... it wasn't.

Mathonwy.....Luongo isn't getting any younger.90 % of NHL players slide pretty quickly at 34, so why hold onto a depreciating asset? The Canucks as currently constructed have a hole in the middle and on the 2nd line RW position REGARDLESS if Ryan Kesler is healthy or not. They NEED a top 9 centre who can provide more offence than Max Lapierre and they NEED a 2nd line RW who can score 20 goals + and also pass the puck. Hanging onto Luongo is a retarded move if a good hockey trade can be made. As for CS his natural progression is to actually have the number one spot and be trated like a number one goalie not having Luongo hanging over his shoulder like some fucking vulture.
