A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. However, we all need a break some time so this forum is basically for anything off-topic, off the wall, or to just get something off your chest! This forum is named after poster Creeper, who passed away in July of 2011 and was a long time member of the Canucks message board community.

How are they going to deal with everyone going across the already ridiculous 5 years ago, patello bridge by Scott road?
To avoid the toll?
How can it be that a province as rich as BC can't build a bridge without a toll?

How long before they turn two of those ten lanes into fucking bike lanes?

I've always admired the forethought in the number of lanes on the Burrard St Bridge........until Gregor.

Toll roads are wonderful. We need more of them. Bring back the toll on the Coquihalla!

I have no problem with user fees helping out to offset capital and maintenance costs.

Kinda thought that's what taxes were for.

The NDP will sort it all out next year.

the right needs a leader. Christy is a joke.......Cummins is a scrub. Give Stockwell Day or even Gordon Tyabji a crack at it.

In reality they should just hit every crossing or major hwy upgrade a buck or hit us all with a hwy improvment fee of $100 when we renew our insurance. Why is the poor prick in Whalley getting boned while the asshead that can afford to go to Whistler on the new and improved sea to sky pays fuck all ???

Seriously guys, why the HELL would they do that?!?

Found out the answer to this query.

Apparently Kiewit was given two options, twining the Port Mann and producing a 6 lane new bridge and then fixing up the old Port Mann so that it would last as long as the new bridge. They would have to modify the old bridge to new standards and codes as well.

The other option was to build the 10 lane new bridge and tear down the old bridge, which is what was chosen due to cost factors. It would have cost far more to modify the old bridge and build the new 6 lane bridge than to build a new 10 lane bridge and tear down the old Port Mann.

Thanks for responding Aaron, HOWEVER...

Why not build the new 10-lane bridge and leave the old bridge alone? They wouldn't hafta "modify the old bridge to new standards and codes" if they weren't twinning it amirite? Nope, it seems like the real reason they wanna tear it down is that most folks would continue to use the old bridge because the government wouldn't be able to justify placing a toll upon the old bridge if it weren't "modified to new standards and codes".

And I suppose that IS a dilemma indeed.

How bout this then, leave the old one up just for walkers, jumpers, and bicameral bisexual bicyclists? :mex:

Aaronp18 wrote:As a side note September 15th they will be opening up the Eastbound lanes on the new Port Mann because the need to demolish portions of the old bridge's Eastbound lanes in order to finish the Westbound lanes on the new bridge.

I must be missing something.... WDF??

You're more than likely right, those were the options that were laid out by the Ministry. Of course they want their tolling money and the option to keep the old one as is and build the 10 lane new bridge wasn't one presented.

What Topper said.

If you head over the bridge right now you'll notice how close the new bridge is to the old one right beside the slow Eastbound lane of the old bridge. Right where the road curves as you come onto the bridge deck.

I dunno they shoulda built the 10-laner a tad further downstream and left the old one up!

Coulda had Spidey's pals plant crops on it or cover it in solar panels or some shit.

Then the whole world woulda said how wonderful we are....

It is all part of the south Fraser bypass network, and a little further down stream cuts into a serious chunk of residential. Birdland used to be a bit of a hidden gem in Scurvey.

So was this "Birdland" ruined by the new bridge?

Birdland is tucked away in the trees just downstream. It got its name because all the streets are bird's names.

The 10 lane bridge is enticing especially with the el cheapo superb houses that never sell in the North Surrey area, especially in the Fraser Heights area.

A 700K mansion like house has been on the market for over a year now in that area, brand spanking new!

Still thinking of Austin Ave though near Lougheed mall, at least the millennium line runs there, help on ga$.
