He wanted to play in Vancouver. He had offers on the plus side of 5 million per. The Canucks held firm on the internal structure but gave him one more year than other teams were offering. So he had several offers at plus 5 for 5+ years. He takes 4.6 for 6 years to stay a Canuck. Canucks had to offer the sixth year to get the cap hit they wanted. Would we rather have paid 5.5 for 5 years? Or 6 for 4 years?

He had a Wideman contract offer in front of him but wanted to be a Canuck. So it cost us one extra year.

Like I said before I don't know the guy but when you look at all the silliness July 1 brings it is refreshing that a player will leave money on the table to play here. It also explains why Mg wasn't in on any other players. He isn't willing to go crazy.
The only HW the Canucks need

You take the extra year to get the cap right, and not upset the D-men salary structure. Once we get the new CBA done then like always the cap will rise over the next 6 years, so providing he lives up to the billing, it seems to a pretty solid deal; legit top 4 guy, a salary that is generous but not insane, and someone who really wants to be in Van and win as a Canuck.

Apparently his nickname is G52 Bomber in Florida.

New team, new nickname.

My contribution for consideration is "The Rock"

Rock solid defensively, hits a ton, has a blast of a shot and it pays homage to his home town of White Rock.

The Salo contract makes this signing look good by comparison. There are questions however.

Did Garrison come off an exceptional year (in part because of Campbell) ?
Or, is he getting better year by year ?

Time will tell.

Basically what I was thinking.

Given that mantra, and the fact he's from White Rock, Garrison was likely the no1 target this off season.

YES! :D After Suter, in my book, this guy was top of the FA choices for Vancouver! Great negotiating too. Why don't other GM's learn? He definitely sounds like a younger Salo - very steady in his own end, with a bazooka shot from the point!
This steadying influence in their own end is just what the team needs! Reminds me of Hamhuis, actually, in that way.

Garrison led the Cats in icetime two years ago (pre-Campbell).

He has been a mainstay on their #1 PK for two seasons.

Playing with Brian Campbell definitely helped his offensive numbers last year.

But guess wot, now he's playing with Alexander Edler on YOUR Vancouver Canucks!

I really like Garrison's versatility.

The ability to play in every situation, PK, PP, top-lines, and playing both the left and right side, is a major plus.

He's essentially Ehrhoff, except Garrison's defensive game is better while Ehrhoff is better on the offensive end.

The other big positive is Garrison's size. Although he's not a punishing player, he plays hard and adds some more size and grit to the top 4. Edler-Garrison is a more physical pairing than Edler-Salo.

Contrary to others, I'm in no rush to move Ballard, unless you can replace him with a more suitable player. I thought Ballard was playing well late in the season, particularly against the Kings. AV spoke positively of him during that time, and he trusted him in more situations as well. If Ballard and AV have moved forward, then he's a solid guy on the 3rd pair and has the ability to move into the top 4 on the left-side if someone gets injured.

Hamhuis-Bieksa
Edler-Garrison
Ballard-Tanev

Tanev has shown he can at the very least handle a top 4 role for extended stretches, and if Ballard can do the same, then we have a finely balanced, and deep blueline.
