NHL 12' (or online gaming) - How do you build your team?
Hey y'all,
I was just wondering as to how you guys build your teams when playing NHL 12' (or online hockey games in general) when using the fantasy draft and building a team from scratch? I usually use the following method when picking: (I haven't played NHL 12 yet but this is the format that I intend to use........as this is the format that I've used in all the other games).
-Superstar goalie (or elite defenseman)
-Elite/semi-elite defenseman (or very very good goalie)
-Elite/semi-elite defenseman
-Solid defenseman
-Solid defenseman
-Two way center that can play shut down hockey
-Top notch shut down center
-Top notch shut down center
-Shut down center
-3rd/4th calibre defenseman that will play 5/6
-3rd/4th calbire defenseman that will play 5/6
-Big Gritty winger that back checks well
-Big Gritty winger that back checks well
-Big Gritty winger that back checks well
-Big Gritty winger that back checks well
-Big Gritty winger that back checks
-Big Gritty winger that back checks
-Big Winger that is a top notch fighter but plays hockey reasonably well
-Big Winger that is a top notch fighter but plays hockey reasonably well
-7th defenseman
-8th defenseman
-Back up goalie
-etc. etc., etc.
I try and build my teams similar to how the New Jersey Devils played between 1995 and 2003, but a more exaagerated version. In a way, they are almost a hybrid of New Jersey Devils from that era and the Bruins of the current era (in terms of toughness). I trap like crazy, play shut down hockey, and try and injure opponents with hard body checks. Laying people out with crushing body checks is a bigger pleasure for me then scoring highlight reel goals.
I tend to have a lot of cap room due to the plummers I choose to use up front.

I would skate circles around and you would never cross my blueline with the puck because I would take it from you.
If you played with authentic rules then you would spend half the game in the penalty box.
EA has done a good job of getting the speed element tweaked and actually making it count for something. Defense is important, and paramount when it comes to simming games, but if you actually play against someone speed and passing kills.

The last NHL video game that I consistently played was NHL Rivals' 2004. 8 years ago! (and NHL 97' for Super Nintendo before that). I tend to get an itch for gaming every 7-8 years.
All of my teams were built using the traditional 'goal out' approach, and all of the players that I would draft in the fantasy draft would be rated extremely highly for 'checking' and 'aggression.'
I've been out of video games forever but I'm starting to get curious about the advancements, etc. The impression I get from some of these latest EA NHL games is that it takes a significant investment of time to become quite good at it. It's almost TOO real.
One game I REALLY loved WAY back in the day was 'Blades of Steel' for regular Nintendo. Such a simple game but easily one of the best games that I have ever played.

I created another team shortly afterwards but forgot to write down who I had. Off the top of my head......Farhan Lalji wrote:Finally got around to playing NHL 12' today. Here is what my team ended up looking like:

Now we know where you two get your hockey knowledge from.
Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.
I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.
