The more I think about what Keith did and then Weber the more confused I am about Rome and Bitz getting suspended. I think Bitz deserved it, not too sure about Rome. But I am just seething at the latest re Weber. Man if that was Hank or Dank he did that too I'd be lining up to buy a gun.
People crucified Bert for what he did. To me this was just as bad with the exception that with good luck there was no injury on the play.
Can you imagine if Rome did that? Or Edler? or Bieksa?
Agree for the most part. The only reason I give the punch any slack is cause it glancing. Still a shit play and cumulatively with the turnbuckle move it should have been a suspension. Plain and simple. 1-2 games. All this said however, using the "Shanny math" described about a month ago where playoff suspensions were more heavily weighted than regular season, does that mean Bitz's 2 games weighs more like 8 games?"
Just conspiracy theory. The call was wrong on the ice and the discipline wrong after the fact. There would have been a heavier suspension to the player, who rushed to defend Zetterburg, cold cocked Weber and started a full on brawl after the game buzzer went.
And for the record, I'd still sell Mason Raymond's mother to get Weber on the Canucks for 2012/13.

Apart from all that Bitz was at least a hockey play......lest we forget!! Weber was an all out intent to inure and predatory in nature. Some thing like Keith getting 2 minutes for a deliberate attempt to injure with a predatory hit solely to the head...get's 2 min from the on ice official..... Bitz gets 5 & a game for a hockey play, as nasty as it was. It's not worth speculating how many games Rome/Bieska/Edler would have received for a Weber type assault
My faith in the NHL officials is at an all time low and frankly I have no way of knowing what they're calling. Heck even off sides and Icing are being screwed up on a regular basis, I suspect the TV people want a quicker game.
NHL = Mickey Mouse

Haha funny same sentiments, just wrote something to this topic in the OOTS thread before reading this.

Sounds stupid but what the NHL are telling player don't hit a guy a la ( Bitz) stop up grab the guy and drive his head into the glass ( Weber) that way you miss any suspension and only get $2500 fine.
Ya, I won't defend Bitz. I have no doubt it was unintentional but it was the right call and suspension worthy. But in comparison with other rulings it is mind boggling. Since it is the playoffs and suspension will be about half of what they would be in the regular season, why not get Kassian to drive his elbow into someone's jaw and on the way off the ice he can grab someone else and smash their head into the boards/glass/whatever. That way he should only get 2 games (half of Keith's) plus a $2500 fine. We might get lucky and knock two King's out.
Then if we win the series get someone else to do the same thing as we don;t want a repeat offender doing it. If we do this the whole way we might be able to knock out 8 or so guys and really not suffer much of anything.
So how cone no one notices that Canuck fans seem pretty united that Bitz deserved his call and are out rages at what Weber did and in support of Zetterberg? We are not all bad you know.

Well that is a bit of an exaggeration, but he certainly could have been concussed.
Regardless, the NHL is a complete disgrace after that. Just to prove a point Gillis should call-up a Wolf and have Vigneault instruct him to do the same thing to Williams, Carter, or Richards. Then when the league decides to rule, precedent has been set.....just make sure that the Wolf player in question has no priors.
It just goes to what I've been saying on boards for quite sometime. The NHL simply doesn't care about stopping the acts themselves. If they were they would be punishing the act and not the result. Yes on some level the result maybe should be taken into account but waiting for the injury to occur just means the the 9 or 10 similar acts that didn't result in punishment are receiving nothing or minimal sentences.
According to the Wings the blow Weber inflicted on Zetterberg cracked his helmet. That's a significant force and straight up attempt to injure. Apparently Attempt to injure for a repeat offender in the playoffs is a $2500 fine. NHL once again shows they have zero balls and only pay lip service to protecting players.
01:36 NSH SHEA WEBER : FIGHTING (MAJ) - 5 MIN
01:36 DET TODD BERTUZZI : FIGHTING (MAJ) - 5 MIN
At least Weber didn't turtle and skate away when challenged...
Fucking stupid NHL, still up to the players to hand out street(ice) justice...
*apologies to all that think I am being arrogant and pompous asshole when it comes to hockey, I am am nothing more than a humble puck wretch, not a domestic terror...er....troll
Since there are no salaries in the playoffs, if Weber had been suspended and not fined, he would suffer no loss of pay and the team would be penalized.

I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.
OK, fine him and suspend him. Now that the Canucks are down 2 games to zip, I'm really f*ing angry about Mr. Keith and the NHL discipline group. It's garbage.
Shanahan has screwed the pooch and will suffer for it. With the Weber fine/non suspension he lost not only in the court of public opinion but also lost respect among the coaches and players. his desperate scramble to reel things back is a running joke.
After Bertuzzi fought Weber, here is what one of Shanahan's go to organizations had to say
“Sometimes when things don’t get looked after, you have to look after it yourself,”
Those were the words of Bruce Babcock.
As Shanahan tries to make ammends for the Weber gaff, he hands out a suspension to Hagelin for the elbow to Alfie, and this is what The Rangers, as an organization have to say.
"thoroughly perplexed in the ruling's inconsistency with other supplementary discipline decisions that have been made throughout this season and during the playoffs."
